I've been taking Gabapentin since September and while it's helped my nerve pain immensely, I am heavier than I've ever been. I am very active and eat healthy. No soda, no junk food. I've even started working out more to deal with the weight gain but to no avail. I can't drop any of the new weight. My husband is perplexed because he sees how conscious I am in trying to lose the added weight but it's not going anywhere. I need to speak to my doctor about trying something else. This is insanely frustrating. It has nothing to do with motivation, it has to do with body chemistry and side effects.

hello, I am reading this thread to find information on why I gained 40 lbs in 6 months. I was prescribed gabapentin when I quit drinking alcohol to steady my "nerves". I just learned about the weight gain today and it explains everything.during the six monthes I was on a health kick. I cut out thousands of calories from mY diet and excersiced more that I had in years and I gained 40lbs. size 10 to size 20 and I am 5'3" in six months. Don't take this drug if you can help it. my caloric intake and activity are not to blame, I know that. I hope I can loose this weight. it is so awful how fast it came on and i hAVE NEVER BEEN ABOVE A SIZE 12 IN MY LIFE.

It is not from calories or inactivity. The weight gain is real and unexplained. 40 lbs in 4 months. I cut out alcohol, sugar, wheat. most days I have under 1000 calories and work out heavily everyday plus work on my feet walking for eight hours. I thought I was crazy until I found this forum. gabapentin did this, honest.

Same here, gained a lot of weight, my self esteem is sh*t to hell.
Lowered my dose by half but haven't lost a thing. I don't eat much either, never hungry. So why the weight gain? It's so frustrating.

I too was a size 6 and have been steadily gaining weight which completely freaks me out. I have now decided to stop taking it, which I do not recommend that anybody else does but I would rather live in pain than gain weight

Wow! When I read your post, I had to re-read it because I thought it was something I wrote. Everything you wrote describes me. I'm two weeks into taking Gabapentin, but now I feel like I can exercise and sleep and be more on top of things. Let's hope we don't experience the weight gain!

I am among the many who have been on Gabapentin and experienced unexplained weight gain. In my case, it's close to 20 lbs, but the main effect is that no diet ever takes weight off at any normal rate. I'm used to doing certain things when I need to reduce (low carb, upping activity, etc.), but these things no longer work. I'm going to see if I can get by without it, so wish me luck.

I'm down to 600 mg a day and that's for sleeping, but I know if I eat right and keep moving I shouldn't need it soon, well at least I hope! Good luck to you!
