I haven't lost my mind, I promise, I'm just curious.

But how does one train for an ultra? For example, and my reason for thinking about it, the Sunmart 50k and 50miler are coming up here in December. They are very popular, particularly the 50K. I always hear people raving about it because its all trails and soft and 'easier than the marathon' :umno: (and apparently the food is good, I hear that rave the most.... ) but my question is, do you run a marathon or several distances longer than 26 to train for it? I guess you could actually walk it, they have a course time limit of 12 hours or so. I don't know, I don't understand, nor do I really have the desire to do it, I'm just curious.

I know at least Kobyj has done this, enlighten me. :wiggle:

<<Psst, Pfff...take your pills, you're losing your grasp on reality again>>

Have no idea! Is this the one in Huntsville on the 13th? If so, you can't do it as you'll be running the half in Dallas My Coach is running a 50k in Huntsville that day.

I'd have to offer, that for good food, anything is possible!

I don't know. I think of the marathon distance it have no interest in ever going farther than that. Of course, once i reach my goal of running a marathon, maybe i've love the experience so much that i want to double it.

Or maybe not.

I have tons of respect for anyone who can run an ultra....a lot of curiosity, but tons of respect.

I just heard saw some discussion of Sunmart the other day (and the good food ) and started thinking about it. I talked to someone else and because its a trail ultra apparently you have to go to Huntsville every weekend for a year and run trails.... :umno:
But they aren't all on trails, what do people do?

It seems like trail running is about the only way to survive week in and week out of putting in 3, 4 or 5 hour runs on weekends. I don't think because an ultra might be on the road, there necessarily has to be a lot of training on roads, still using trails is the way to go.
An ultra buddy I have does much of his running off road and those long weekend runs are the cornerstone of what he does. Marathons just happen to be training runs for him. Then the 50-milers are a couple a year. And he still does the occasional 100-miler.. at age 64!

I have no desire to run further than 26.2 miles.

EVER

It is hard enough on the bod to go that far....I can't imagine going farther. 8O

You don't have train any differently for a 50k than for a marathon. Once you run a marathon, you sign up for a 50k and start running. When you hit mile 26, you just say "oh sh!t, I've got 5 more miles!"

The Sunmart is a great race with lots of goodies. I still have 2 really nice afgans (blanket?) that you get for finishing. Nice awards and yes the food is great. The buffett was at a nice hotel by Intercontinental and once the speaker was Helen Klein, very inspirational, she holds tons of records for the upper age groups, and has done that stage race in the Sahara desert.

Trail runs are very social and have a close comraderie that marathons don't have. The Sunmart has several loops and you see some of the same people at different times and somebody usually has something funny or encouraging to say. People stop at the aide stations and visit while snacking and waiting for the potty.

You don't need to train on trails either. I run in the same boring suburban streets that katzoo does!

:1: I know of and met a fellow coolrunner living in my area who regularly does ultras in the 50-100k range. Maybe running an ultra would be one of my longer term goals.

My training for ultras is basically the same effort as my training for a marathon. I take out the speed workouts and replace them with normal length runs. As for the long runs, I don't usually consider going over the 26 mile mark unless I'm training for a 24-hr.

The thing to remember is you are out to have fun during these. I usually chat with the other runners around me (and nature ).

The 50k wouldn't be much harder then a marathon. Now, it would be harder then Chicago since Chicago was flat and a trail race would have hills.
