Hi, folks. My friend plays basketball occasionally, but last time we played, he got injured. Doctor said that he torn his knee cartilage. This seems very serious to me. I would like to know how this injury is treated. I would like to know this. I will appreciate if anyone could reply to me. Thanks.

Hello. Knee cartilage is also known as meniscus. There are two menisci. This cartilage is often being damaged due to degenerative processes or injuries. Treatment that patient itself can manage is immobilization, ice packs and rest. X-ray does not help much in diagnosing, but MRI does. An evaluation is necessary to determine whether surgery is necessary or not. Surgery can be done as meniscus repair or meniscectomy. However, if meniscus is not damaged significantly, then operation is not necessary. Many people can live with thorn cartilage.
