Hi I know it can be maddening. I am also a vegetarian . My cholesterol gets very high. My family has a history of high cholesterol. So no matter what I eat or do not eat it goes high. My body just manufactures it. My doctor put me on meds for it. Then on them my blood pressure went up . So I was put on meds for that . I stay on them for a while and feel like c**p. So it is like a yo yo. Go figure.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Check your facts. According to Nutritionfacts.org, the eskimos have suffered high rates of cardiovascular disease throughout their history and in fact their incidence of CAD went down when the standard American diet hit their villages in 1965. They continue to have high rates of Atheroschlerosis.

It's good to hear somone who has the real facts for a change. Everything abdoman8 has said is correct. We have been misled on this cholesterol thing for years. I had a heart attack 8 years ago. I was on statins that made me quite ill. My cholesteral went down to 2.2 I stopped takeing them about 6 years ago, my cholesteral is 7.4 now and I feel good.

No expert myself, but "vegetarian" diet can mean many different things - donuts are "vegetarian" for example as are potato chips. So of course vegetariands can have high cholesterol. Also remember that even toothpaaste contains cholesterol.

Cholesterol levels don't link with genes. Its how much carbs you eat. A normal breakfast has way more fat then a breakfast if all meat. Try eating on the paleo diet. It worked for me. I have lost over 40 pounds and my cholesterol is normal.

My total cholesterol is 206. The LDL is 144 & the HDL 53. So, I guess I'm on the high side for "bad" cholesterol. The problem is, I don't know why. I only eat meat once in a blue moon (maybe once every few months or so). My diet is mostly comprised of whole grains, beans, vegetables, nuts. salmon & occasionally tuna. I also eat eggs and cheese occasionally, but not every day. I'd be interested to know what I can do to bring it down.

Gee, can I weigh in? It would be nice if the OP came back to let us know what the test results were. IMO, any oil that you use in your diet will add to your bad numbers. Oil and Water simply don't mix, and since we are 90% water, I keep my diet on the lighter, water based side. Also, any dairy that you consume will add to your bad numbers. I call myself vegetarian as well, but only on special and rare occasions (maybe once a month) will I consume, dairy, meat, fish, etc. Lets face it, you go out to eat, you generally don't know what the chef is putting on your meal. I count those in my rare days. My numbers have been steadily declining over the past 2 years. I don't believe the hype that (good quality) olive oil is good for you. Or avocado oil, or coconut oil.....doctors used to say that smoking won't harm you either! Food is turning into the next extreme polarized conversation. Think about it, good luck on your quest. Medication is not the answer (in most instances)

Drop the eggs and cheese, and anything else dairy, such as milk and yogurt. Salmon and tuna are still meat. Put those on the super rare occasion list. And stop using oil. There is no such thing as an oil that is good for your water based body. Water and oil just don't mix.
