I never discussed it with my parents but times are a bit different now. Only you know how your parents might feel. Some parents talk about it with their kids and tell them it's natural and normal while others are too embarrassed to. If there is a mention of it on TV or somewhere else that you and your parent(s) both see, you might be able to ask them something then.
In school it was different though with my friends. We did joke about it. I'm a guy and we mostly gave each other a hard time about it joking about it. Saying to your buddy who lives a block away that he was doing it so hard last night he was rattling the windows at your house. If he was really tired from not sleeping we accused him of doing it all night.
If you want a serious conversation about it with your bf you can probably figure a way to get that going. I bet most of your friends feel the same way you do and just don't know how to start talking about it. I have seen it mentioned on some TV talk shows so you could just say you saw something about it on TV and see where it goes from there. Your boyfriend may be thrilled to be able to talk with you about it.
