Oral candidiasis (thrush) is one possible explanation. It manifests as white lesions on the tongue and lining of the mouth cavity. This is caused by the opportunistic fungus Candida that also causes vaginal yeast infection. Contributing factors include uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, oral antibiotics and corticosteroids, stress, immune deficiency, pregnancy or the use of birth control pills. Consult with your dentist to rule out oral cancer.
