I've read this as a solution to many others and I think I am going to try it. I did it before but with only regular water. Does it have to be saline spray? I figured I might as well continue with the regular water in it until I can get it down even further and then add the saline? The affrin addiction is ridiculous, it's the only thing that's begins working immediately, but now sometimes I have to spray it 4, 5 or even 6 times for it to work. If I leave it at my house when I go to work I have to call my parents to bring it down o me.

Someone just told me a few days ago if I am having problems like that because of pollen allergies instead of using medicines to get a bottle of locally produced honey. Take a tablespoon of honey everyday along with a teaspoon of cinnamon. They said the honey contains various traces of the different pollens in the area and builds up a natural immunity while the cinnamon worked to keep the nasal passages from swelling. I don't really know anything about this but once I am off the Afrin I might give it a shot next spring when the allergies go into high gear.

Afrin can cause rebound congestion if using for more than three days, causing you to need it daily.

fantastic post. i've been addicted to this for over the past 6 months now. also, a little over a year addiction to it 10 years ago in college, and around 5 years ago for close to a year. all starts with a bad cold combined with a stressful life situation. when going through a stressful life situation, if i am unable to breath through my nose for even the shortest period of time, can throw me into a full blown panic attack. it's scary as heck. i rationalize with my self that i can breath through my mouth, but still panic. it's embarrassing to admit, but i am truly committed to getting off this. thank you again for an inspirational post. there is hope. peace

try using this afrin stuff in left nostril once with a slight mist....... then leave the right nostril closed ( clogged ) treatment of the right nostril includes using the product called ( ayr-saline nasal spray and gel ) the gel goes into the nostril lightly in-around to soothe and keep your nasal membrane moist for easy breathing at best....but it will heal without using the 'afrin spray' in right nostril. i'm currently testing it out my self......... going on 3 days and my right nostril seems to be getting back to normal function but you have to continue to go through the process of ( REBOUND CONGESTION ) IN THE RIGHT NOSTRIL....... THEN WHEN THAT HEALS UP........ STOP THE USE OF AFRIN IN THE LEFT NOSTRIL AND HEAL IT WITH ( AYR-SALINE SPRAY AND GEL ) GOOD LUCK MY FRIEND....PS. AT EVERY TIME OF OPPORTUNITY THROUGHOUT THE DAY USE ' SALINE SPRAY THAT DOES NOT CONTAIN THE ADDITIVES CALLED (BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE) WHICH IS THE CAUSE OF ( REBOUND CONGESTION ) LOOK IT UP BEFORE YOU BY THE PRODUCT........ALWAYS READ THE INGREDIENTS AT FIRST HAND......... COMPANIES MAKE MONEY BY HAVING THEIR CUSTOMERS BUY THE VERY INGREDIENT THATS CAUSING THE EFFECT PROBLEM. GET WELL SOON

I have been addicted to Afrin on and off for many years and didn't realize what the spray was doing to me. Now I'm on Prednisone to help me quit. So we will see if this helps. I have tried Nasonex and Flonase that seemed to make my congestion worse. I also take Allegra for allergies. I need to breathe through my nose in order to sleep so that is my biggest problem of all. I had surgery on a deviated septum almost 2 weeks ago so I haven't slept well since. I resorted to the Afrin just so I could get some sleep. I am praying that the Prednisone works and I also want to know what to use in place of the Afrin when I have trouble breathing.

Afrin nasal spray is very bad for health. If any one is addicted to it can't easily come out of it without getting proper treatments.

Flonase has worked for me. I took my first dose one week ago, and used Afrin as needed. it's been 48 hrs since the last dose, and I'm breathing very well. I'll continue with Flonase for a few more dayside give my sinuses a little more time to normalize! and then stop.

It's brutal to quit the stuff. I was addicted for over two years and got off it Christmas 2013. Took about two weeks to get normal. Prepare to get some time off of work and/or use some pretty heavy narcotics at night to sleep. But it does get better.

Use it in one nostril only...the other nostril will be clogged but you can breathe out of one- then in a few days the one with no afrin will be clear then stop

I have been addicted to Afrin Original for 3 years now, It is driving me nuts i even have those nasal sleep strips on my nose everyday allday the past 6 months to help because my nose gets soo stuffy, i'm completely dependent on the stuff that i buy the 3 pack at costco just to have enough because it isn't cheap either.  It's become soo bad that i can't leave the house without it, I have some stashed at my friends house too just incase i forget,  There has to be an easier way than to just cold turkey it wich doesn't seem like it's even an option at this point.

I would rather get surgery than try and cold turkey it if that was an option.
