Hi Spencer,
I am a mom of a 13 year old boy. You remind me of him. The first thing I want to tell you is how proud I am that you are trying to take care of yourself. You sound like a very smart teen. I really encourage you to find an adult that you trust so that you can tell them your feelings and have some one to talk to. Adults tend to do things without thinking of how it affects other people around them. Your life has changed a lot lately and sometimes it doesn't seem fair because you don't have any control over it. You said that you have thought of "taking an overdose". This is a scary thing to hear from a young teenager. This is NOT the answer. You MUST talk to an adult about your feelings, especially these feelings. I can hear that you are feeling very discouraged by the recent events of your life. I am sorry about your grandfather. It is never easy to lose someone you love but I can promise you that in time you will feel better. I lost my little sister and I thought that I would never stop hurting but I did and so will you.
To answer your question about how to get in shape mentally: The first thing I would suggest to you is to talk to an adult that you trust. You need that more than anything. I would encourage you to talk to your parents. You need to be able to go to them. If you feel you can't, how about a teacher at school, a grandmother or an aunt or uncle? The most important thing is to get the support of an adult.
Now, physically: At 13, 5'1" and 130 pounds, you are not obese. My suggestion to you is to get involved in sports at school. Sports will help you get in shape and gain confidence in yourself. It is good for you both physically and mentally. Try to not gain any weight intead of trying to go on a diet and you will thin out as you get taller. Exercise is the important thing for you to be healthy. Do not eat high sugary food like candy and sweets very often and when you do, only eat a little. Getting enough rest is also very important for you at this time.
I am proud of you and your parents are too although sometimes it is hard for you to see that. Please let them know how much their approval means to you. You have searched for an answer to a very adult question and you should find an adult to help you answer it.
I hope this helps you. I will keep you in my prayers........Kathy
