I went to the eye doctor for a follow-up visit to ensure the viral conjunctivitis that plagued me from October to March was gone. Instead I found out I had a different strain, and from 6pm to midnight had to put antibiotic eyedrops in my eyes every half hour, and then every hour thereafter through the night until my emergency follow-up appointment this afternoon. (You can only imagine how wide awake and non-cranky I am today. ) My opthamologist, like my primary doctor, gynecologist, and surgeon before her, said the reason I keep getting sick is because I run so much, and my immune system is having difficulty keeping up with the rest of me.

WTF? Running is supposed to be good for you. I eat right, and sure I push myself, but I stop well before it causes me pain or damage. So I went from 25mpw to 50+ in April. I was able to sustain it with narry a problem for over two months before I got sick with the other thing. Looking back over the past 14 months, I do see that I've been sicker than I've ever been. Colds (I have a bad one now), bronchitis, TWO serious eye infections, medical conditions, intensified migraines. I was healthier as a cheese fry-eating alcoholic smoker!

What gives? I'm getting really tired of being sick and tired. I'm 32YO and falling apart.

Possibly too much too soon. I know it's a tired and cliched but it just might be true in your case. Consider backing down your mileage a little and giving yourself some rest and THEN working your mileage back up.

so listen to your body: it's not ready for that kind of mileage!

I've been reading Dr George Sheehan, and that is one of the topics he covered. He said if he overdid his training, he got a cold. He also states that we walk a fine line between optimum health and illness because of the way we push our bodies.

Great book: Running and Being

Interesting. I guess June did me a lot of good, where I was forced to drop to 11 a week.

But how do you know when you're doing too much? Seriously, I felt more energized and alive than I ever had. Never tired, never achy. The absolute best I ever felt. I could understand if I'd felt like c**p, but it was the exact opposite.

you forgot to complete the sentence...."until I got ill over and over..." :D
Everyone has a different break point. Maybe you did too much too soon. Have you been taking step down weeks to give your body recovery time? Looking at your log, how far were you running right before you began to have trouble? If it's a bit less, maybe you should drop down to that level. You may be able to maintain 40 mpw, but not 50.
Good luck, and you do not have permission to quit running!

seriously, sorry to hear about your eye and i am sure they put the fear of God into you about how serious these things can get...please listen to their "drop" instructions!!!!
time to just back down Elkid, that's all. and possibly consider a supplement. i take a liquid whole food supplement that is excellent. my health nut brother continually harps on me about how running can do more damage than good if i don't put back what i take out..i usually him but there is some truth there.
get better and then get back out there cuz you certainly got lots of benefit from your program.

Giving up running isn't the answer. That's by far the most positive thing you're doing for yourself. Don't take this as being overly critical, but from the weekend reports and travel stories, could :cheryl: be more than a casual part of the equation here? I don't touch the stuff myself and can only imagine your body is dealing with processing alcohol while trying to recover from the illnesses and increasing running stamina all at the same time. :twocents:

I hear you Elkid. I've been plagued by illness and injury since I quit smoking, lost 40 lbs and started exercising. I'm still trying to figure out when I'm going to feel healthier!

Currently I'm nursing some bruised ribs from an unfortunate obstacle course accident during National Guard training. I don't think I've been able to run consistently for two months straight since I started in October. It's going to be a month total I'll be off this time at the rate I'm healing.

Don't let it get to you though. Take it as it comes and if you get sick back down. Just don't give up. You can't get healthy in a day. Your body is just adjusting to the new you. Once it learns to keep up with the schedule you want to keep, nothing will stop you!

That's a lot of times how it happens, you think it sneaks up on you when it has slowly been you wearing down all along. It's not like an injury, where BAM! you sprained your ankle instantaneously and you know exactly when it happened. Speaking from the perspective of a person with a chronic illness, it takes a while for me to get to the point of relapsing when I push too hard, but when it hits....it hits hard.
I know you and I have differed on this topic from day one, but I stand by my original concerns. Hope you get better soon....you really do have the rest of your life to run, you know. You don't have to do it all in one year.

8O You doubled your weekly mileage in a month? No wonder you've been sick.
I know you probably want to improve your running ability, continue losing the weight you've been losing, increase the toned and fit look you've started to notice, etc...
But, you have to remember that you really want to continue to run for the rest of your life. And, that you want to have the rest of your life to run.
Back the mileage down and slowly increase it. Over time you will find the right weekly mileage for you where all of the good things happen, but none of the bad.
