I would pick sleeping pills over cold medicine any day. I personally don't think that it's safe to take cold medicines unless you have a cold and are feeling the specified symptoms. I have sleeping pills and I don't take them all the time. They're supposed to help you sleep, they're the Unisom brand. These particular ones claim to be non habit forming, my only argument against that is that your mind can become dependent on them. What I mean by that is you can convince yourself that you can't sleep unless you take them. Call it a psychological addiction. I usually take one maybe three days in a row (if I can't sleep to save my life) then with that little help a sleeping patter starts to form so your body understands it's time to sleep. Now with these pills you need to lay down in bed and give them about 20-30 mins to work. I find that if I don't lay down I can stay awake even if I take one of these pills. However, when i lay down I am out. I hope this helps, I would look into the unisom brand before I took cold medicine. Good luck!

I suggest that you maybe try herbal pills and remedies. There is a huge market for these and a wide range of products is available. They often use only natural products, which wont interfere with your current medication.

I personally use a herbal sleeping pill, and a lavender temple rub. I understand it all sounds rather poncy and girly, but if you can make the time for such rituals you will feel an effect. Obviously you have to find the right treatments for you, and not all will work, but they are relaxing and sleep inducing, without being medically dangerous, addictive, or interfering with your cold medicine.

Hope it's been helpful! just_carrie

Sleeping pills can work just fine but it sounds to me like you really need to try to deal with the root of the problem instead. What I think would help you a lot is to try meditating before you go to bed. If you meditate for about twenty minutes beforehand, you should be fine. Does that help? I hope that you do find sleep soon.
