Hi, I'm 19 years old and have had the implant put in my arm almost a year ago. I was expecting to have a long period, as I have has the implant put in and removed before, but it was never this bad. I had a miscarriage almost a year ago, and then the implant was put in again. Only, I have had a period every single day for almost a year. At first it wasn't too heavy or painful, but for just over two weeks now, the bleeding is unbelievable and the pain is absolutely agonising. I have been changing my sanitary towel every 3 hours and have to wear two at a time with kitchen roll on top for extra protection! I soak through two pairs of trousers as well, and it's made me so miserable and less confident. I wake up in the night about twice because I have soaked through sheets and mattress. I have started to wear adult nappies, and even put bed pads on my bed to stop staining the sheets. The period pains (stomach cramps and back pain) are so bad that I have to skip days of work. The pain has brought me to tears numerous times, and stop me from getting out of bed. I went to see my GP a few months ago, but she said to just wait it out as it is common to bleed for about 6 months with the contraceptive implant. But as it has been going on for so long, I am growing more and more concerned. The pain is indescribable. Any help would be great! Thanks, J.

This is absolutely NOT normal.  You should not be bleeding for that long and only for it to be getting heavier, go back to your GP and demand to see a gynocologist for further testing.  The pain is not normal for it to last that long either.  I know this as I am a 39 year old woman that has already had a hysterectomy because of painful and heavy periods for my whole entire life.

I know what it is like to go to sleep like that and have to pack extra clothes along for the day because you are scared that you will soak through your clothes.  I have been fired from jobs before because EVERY month  2 - 4 days I could not physically stand up from the shooting pain down my legs, up my back and up my abdomen.  I've been to the ER too many times to count to stop my bleeding and pain as I would be dripping/gushing with big clots, and doubled over from the pain.  It's not fun!  Gyno's understand and they know that our quality of life PAYS as a female for it, I find that the more understanding gyno's are males.

Hang in there.  And advocate for your health right now.  What is happening to you is not normal whatever your doctor tells you, you need a specialist not a general practitioner.

Use heating pads they are your bestfriends, hot water bottles, hot showers, anything that will or can lessen the pain/cramps.

Good luck and hope this helps
