The treatment of IBS during pregnancy is more oriented to conservative treatment and avoiding drugs since safety of many drugs is either not determined during pregnancy or are considered non-safe. Pregnant women are advised to modify their nutrition and eat foods that are high in fibers, have small frequent meals and avoid foods that cause gas. Coffee and other caffeinated drinks should be limited and high amounts of water should be introduced. For constipation, pregnant women may use stool-bulking agents and soluble fibers. These instructions are advised more-less to any person that suffers from IBS, not only pregnant ladies.
However, drugs that are prescribed to non-pregnant women are usually avoided by pregnant ones.
Other products found safe for pregnant ladies are anti-diarrhea agents if used in moderation and other over the counter laxatives. All laxatives need to be used in moderation because they lead to dependency but hypertonic saline laxatives as well as castor oil and mineral oil are to be avoided because they could interfere with vitamin absorption and even lead to premature labor.
Some women reported acupuncture as good medium for getting rid of gas and bloating.
As for the severity of the disease….different women have different experiences. Some go into remission while others have worse symptoms or don’t experience any change. It also happens that symptoms change and that a woman who suffered from diarrhea starts suffering from constipation. Gas, bloating and cramping may fluctuate in severity during pregnancy!
