Hello! My son had recurent tonsil's infections. He spent many days taking antibiotics and lying in his bed with fever. He started to have problems with his sleep few moths ago. He used to wake up several times during the night which caused sleepiness and irritability during the day. His doctor says his tonsils are causing his sleep disorders since they are enlarged and obstruct normal air flow. He says the best option is surgery. But, I heard tonsils are important part of our immune system and I would like to know if there is a way to save tonsils from tonsillectomy?

Hello! Tonsils are placed at the entrance to the breathing passages where they catch incoming germs. They "sample" bacteria and viruses but they can also become infected themselves. It is believed they work by filtering germs and help in developing antibodies to germs. This is important during the first few years of life and it is becoming less important as we get older. If tonsils are causing more problems then benefit than the right option is surgery. Don't worry your son will suffer no loss in his resistance.
