Hello! My brother is a hepatitis B patient. At first he was treated with Lamivudine but developed resistance after some time. Then his physician introduced Hepsera. He really benefited from treatment with Hepsera and his level of virus in blood showed decrease. But, I am afraid the he could develop resistance to Hepsera too? What if this happens, is there an alternative?

Hi! Every anti viral medicine is studied in many clinical trials to find out whether the resistance would develop or not. As many antiviral medicines Hepsera showed resistance mutations that may reduce that its effectiveness after about three years. 15% to 20% of patients developed resistance to Hepsera after three years of continuous treatment. You newer know if this could happen but if does there is always an alternative drug or combination of drugs. Don’t worry!
