I just had a spinal tap done yesterday. I can't stand up straight and I've had the spinal headaches. But the doctor said these are normal. He warned me about the side effects that I could have which are back pain, infection from the site, spinal headaches, paralysis, weakness of muscles in legs and arms, pain along the spine. And contrary to what others are saying the doctor did say I could die. The reason for death is if I moved or he didn't have a steady hand the needle could tear the sack which would leak spinal cord fluid. The fluid is very toxic when it is released into your body causing your organs to shut down. And the possibility of causing you to be paralysed. Make sure you have to have the tap done or if you can have other tests done first. I hope this helps you out. I know it helped me give consent to it. Good luck.

my partner had a lumbar puncture about 2 years ago, since then he has always had lower back pain. to even press on lower back leaves him very uncomfortable. in last few months he has been doing a lot of lifting at work and the pain is becoming unbearable. is there anything he can do for it? is this normal after a lumbar puncture or should he be seeing a doctor its getting to point where only time it stops hurting is when he lays flat on his back? any feedback or tips would be greatly appreciated!!! would love to see him in no more pain!!!

hello, i would like an update as to your malpractice case.

I am a 25 year old male who had this procedure 9 months ago, and i have had excruciating back pain every single day since then. It's actually getting worse and worse every month. I am on 4 different pills, a patch, and a cream for the pain, but unfortunately none of the medications do a lot.

I didnt get any information after the spinal tap, as far as i am aware it went in on the first try, and everything was fine. I have seen 3 doctors since then (all associated with the same clinic) and no one seems to admit that the lumbar puncture could have caused these issues for me. I have never had ANY back pain in my life, until 2 days after the LP, and i've had it every day since then.

I am currently contemplating hiring a lawyer, but was hoping to get some info as how your case went before i move any further.

also good luck with everything, i know how terrible it is to lose your job due to something like this.
i was a commercial pilot and air traffic controller, but i was diagnosed with MS, which immediately made me lose my FAA certification.

I was in a car accident a year ago.  I suffered from two skull fractures.  I have two surgeries.  My first was where part of my skull was taken out in case I would have brain swelling.  About 6 months later, my second was where this part was my skull was put back.  As the plan of this surgery, I was required to have a spinal tap to remove any fluid prior to this surgery.  As I was getting this spinal tap, the cathetor was stuck in my back.  In other words, I did not actually recieve the spinal tap and the surgery happened regardless.  I was released from this hospital the next morning.  I felt no pain.  However, I can not remember the morning after.  I had so much swelling that I could not open one of my eyes and had one seizure after another.  I was sent back to this hospital and stayed there for a few days.  At this point the Doctor increased the amount of Dialantin I had been taking and prescribed that I take Keppra as well.  Afterwards, I was unable to perform in most ways.  From these sedatives I slept most of the day and received a lot of hallucinations.  I had to hold something to go to the bathroom.  When my Mom became worried we had my levels check.  My level of dialantin was above 50.  Slowly I was told to decrease the amount of dialantin until eventually I was told I didn't have to take dialantin.  It took a while, but I have some energy now.  My question is should I be concerned that I have a cathetor stuck in my back and did I have seizures because I not have any fluid removed prior to my second surgery.

Dannyjoy - I don't think you quite understand... the majority of folk on this thread are not talking about 'oh just back ache!' but problems caused by Lumbar Puncture procedures. My GP has since said that there are (for a small number of people) problems encountered after straight forward L.P. procedures, and these problems can be constant hip and back issues, they don't know what causes it or how to remedy it. That's just for a 'normal' L.P. without complications!
Not everyone is that lucky. If only it was a case of "ouch my back hurts." Some people on here have been so badly affected that their careers are shattered! Over a year and a half on from my 'botched' procedure and the muscles and nerves in my back are still problematic - that's WITH help.... and it could all have been avoided! over 13 attempts in one sitting - now NO one should be put through that - I actually went into shock during the procedure and she still didn't stop! If she'd managed to get a sample it would have been an incorrect one (as once you go into shock this affects the sample). Following the procedure I was blacking out; could not stand, lie or sit comfortably; couldn't lift my arms above my head; and had to crawl up the stairs to move about... but yeah, it's ok, it's just back ache after all!
You may have thought you were being helpful with that link, (though did you not read any of the experiences on here?!) If you haven't experienced this yourself, don't expect to understand!!

I feel the same way with my back pains and my baby is 3 months now. It feels like its getting bad and bader everyday. I cant stand and hold my baby. I can't wash dishes standing. I even have to take my time and cook for my family cause the pain is so bad. I think bad pains comes from the doctors because they had problems with my proceduer because they stuck me about ten times before I went paralyzed.

Hi all,
I had an (3 attempted) L.P's 6 weeks ago. It was unnecessary, the specialist said that he would do further tests to put my mind at rest. The junior doctor who did it had never done it on an adult before but had done it on some babies. I told her to stop after the first attempt, she didnt, she then had another attempt and then the registrar did. firstly ten mins into the procedure the supervisor finally decided to come round the bed to look at what she was doing and he told her that the angle of the nedle was too high, I then felt her go straight through something in my spine and had excrutiating pain going up and down my spine. I had to push my own legs down onto the bed afterwards, was screaming and swearing uncontrollably in pain. The nurse tried to get the doctor to come back she never did. eventually the nurse physically went to bring a registrar, upon neurological evaluation i was not able to lift my legs at all, or push my legs. I was later not able to go to the toilet (bed pan that they provided) as I was paralysed from the ribs down, i eventually was able to lift my legs up after about 3 hours. When i tried to walk about 6/7 hours later I had to be brought back in a wheel chair. I had to be given high doses of codiene straigh after, mlorphine and I am now taking about 18 tablets a day so that I can walk without having pain in my legs which cause them to give way. Ive had bladder bowel and sexual dysfunction, although this is incomplete. Neurological examination of my legs is that the power is normal, 4 in one leg apparantly due to pain. I loose power once i have been walking for a while. The back pain is out of this world as is the leg pain, ive looked up charts which diagram dermatome patterns and all nerves in my lower body seem to be affected much less though in my right leg, however i still get pains in my knees when im walking and cant hardly walk at all due to the pain without taking diclofenac. I was dismissed by the by the neurologist at the hospital, Ive been to A and E 3 times at a different hospital, after taking massive doses of codeien on discharge I was given paracetamol and other anti-inflammatory meds on discharge and had to get a taxi to a and e to get more meds that night. It has been recognised in a and e that the pain is from the l.p. On my 4th A and E visit 4 weeks later i had become very disabled due to the pain and difficulty walking, I was told by a neurologist to go my g.p as this wasnt a medical emergency. I told them that theyd have to get me a duty social worker, as there was no way i was going home as i was not coping and couldnt do basic things, such as walk downstairs and cook a meal. I couldnt stand and still cant stand up for too long in the same spot without getting light headed and feeling faint, I couldnt sit too long without having pain in my spine and lower body ( pain in spine is managed now with new meds ive been given.

Fortunately for me a nice docotor said he wanted to take a look at me and admitted me for some a MRI scan. I was told that the scans were clear, then i overheard a conversation saying the scans had abnormalities, i couldnt quite make out what they said. I was then told by a nurse that they were reviewing my scans again. i was then ignored basically for 7 days. I confronted a neurosurgeon about this, he then told me i had myeelitis, which i think may have been said to mislead me, my discharge notes say, imaging was encouraging??? it also said no immediate follow up neccessary. I was told by one it was unspecific pain, that lots of people have in general? Atleast I got some adequate pain management and am able to apply for a copy of my scan to take elswhere. I have now made a formal complaint. I shiver if I lay in the bath and when i tried to go swimming i had to get out of the pool after 5 mns as I thought that i was going to freeze to death. Ive dug my old psycbiology books out and apparently this is due to nerve damage in the autonomic nervous system. I get pains in my eyes and blurred vision, i get short of breath alot. Ive had to completely put my life on hold. My doctor has now written a letter to the original hospital saying that i had an incorrect lumbar puncture etc, patient is not happy, can a consultant see me. I have to wait 4 weeks. I doubt that he will not tell me anything. After all that no celebrospinal fluid was drawn ( doc said she didnt get into my spinal canal) obviously untrue and they were happy for me to be discharged with no l.p. I dont know if/when i will ever be able to get a neurologist to tell me what happened, why i was paralyzed, if this will be permenant. I think that the anasthetic went in too far and damaged my spinal nerves (hence it became an epidural like what women have in pregnancy), i had horrific burning pain all through my lower body straigh afterwards. Yet i also felt her go through something, I dont know if that was the anasthetic getting through to my spine that caused pain, or if somehow she managed to go straight through a nerve. I know that there must be some damage to my spinal cord as they found something on my scan. I guess I will hve to go private if i have to, although i cant really afford it. If anyone on here as any advice or information that would really be great. I notice that the stats say that L.p's are safe procedures and that the risk of anything serious going wrong is nill or 1% or 0.1%, yet when there are problems after lumabr puncture, they don't record it, doctors then cover it up and put the symptoms together with prior symptoms, the internet is full of stories, it makes me very angry! I wish wholeheartedly wish everyone a good recovery!!!

In response to the two posts above- you may not have read anywhere that you can die from it but from reading peoples experiences with complicated L.P's you'l find that when things do go wrong it is not acknowledged and written down ( due to doctors fears of being sued) all doctors are concerned with then are covering their backs. I was paralyzed during a L.P, I didn't read anywhere that that could happen, thankfully i am walking again now, albeit with great difficulty and also i'm also taking a massive amount of pain killers everyday and cannot work either. I was given a lumbar puncture for headaches and I was told that it was a safe procedure. Its been 6 weeks and I cannot work. You would not believe the appaling treatment and excuses that ive had from the various neuro's that Ive seen since!. I would say to anyone- dont do it unless its a matter of life and death and if you do have to have one done insist on it being done by a senior physician!

I have had 8 spinal taps done. Ie also had 3 blood patches do to cf fluid leaking. Yes the headache horrible. The back pain isn't pleasant and usually. Lasts about a week. However rather have that pain than go blind. Drinking a lot of caffeine and lying flat helps.
