I had a spinal tap done on 1 Jan 2012 and its been 3 months since I have had it done and im still dealing with the pain in my back and my right leg goes numb. I also still deal with the headaches from the spinal tap. The bad thing is I can't do my job in the army which hurts my job performance.

Hello lou, I'm sorry to hear you are suffering this way too... it's been 20 months since the L.P. mess and I'm still having problems (constant pain, muscle spasticity, sudden loss of legs). I hope you are having a better experience!

Hey everyone!
I definatelyunderstand what all of you are going through. I had a spinal tap in August 2011due to viral meningitis. I had another in Sept. because I had a relapse. (The second was at a different hospital. The second spinal tap was so different than the first in regards to pain. I screamed because it hurt so bad! At one point my entire left leg went numb and when I said something the dr said he would adjust his needle and then my right went numb. Not to mention the whole procedure took so much longer and was so incredibly painful. About 3 days later I had back pain which, at first, I contributed to being bedridden and meningitis. However, a month later was not getting better, but worse. I could not return to work because I am constantly on my feet for 8hrs/day. I could not even stand / walk for 45 minutes let alone 8hours. The pain is all in my lower bac and then spreads to my hips. It is the most excruitiating pain I have ever felt! I have seen 2 neurologists, phsyical therapy, a neurosurgeon, and a back specialist. Not one of them can give me a reason for my pain. The back specialist referred me to pain management who I will see in a few weeks. This made me cry because I know now no body is ever going to admit what I think happened and that is that this all occured due to a bad spinal tap. This has ruined my quality of life. I have 3 children and am unable to be the active mom I want to be. I have been forced to stay out of work since I am unable to stand or sit for more than ! hour at a time. I understand I neede to have the punctures to diagnose the meningitis, but I am so angry that it has affected the rest of my life. I want to pursue legal action, but am not sure that it is worth it, due to the fact that the doctors all seem to claim that I am fine.

Yes, I appreciate your situation, Lauren and share your pain, unfortunately. I am seventy -two and still working at a large store in my town. In November, I had a spinal tap to check for MS. The results apparently showed that I fortunately did not. I had no head pain from the procedure and it was not at all unpleasant. However, after bed rest and drinking plenty of fluids, I returned to work and immediately started feeling right hip and leg pain that is now nearly unbearable. Strangely, the only way I get relief is by continuing to work the hard physical work that I am assigned. Unfortunately they can only give me part-time. As soon as I stop the hard work and move to get into my car, I experience extreme hip pain. By the time I get home, I am nearly crippled and must take a hot bath and take a couple of NSAIDS. I fear becoming addicted to narcotics so I refuse anything stronger. I have tried chiropractors etc. to no avail. I too would seek legal action but I am not a litigious person and money would not relieve the pain. I am afraid we may have to tough it out and learn to accept what we cannot change.

Actually, one could die from the procedures if there are other complications e.g. people with brain cancers, clotting problems or if the area becomes badly infected. Never heard of dying from loosing much spinal fluid...I guess we have too much of that....

My Wife had 2 ST in on week, last one was 1 week ago. It was unbearable pain and in a government hospital in South Africa, the sisters told my wife to go to the loo, shower etc directly after the Spinal tap. Can you imagine. My Mother, a retired Sister, luckily informed her to do nothing of the kind, we gave her ALOE vera juice from GNLD and NutriShake mixed with NIDO, infants milk. She took Vitamins and Omega3,6 (ciplaton) and after the meningitis she is recovering well. Ask your doctor about a leak in the CSF or ways to supplement your diet to build up the CSF. Good Luck with your ordeal.

Hi star I know this is an old post but I was up here reading about these procedures bc I have 3 bulging discs and arthritis in my lower back my docs (everyone I've been to) want to give my spinal injections and I've always been weary of it and refuse - I've always heard horror stories about anything having to do with any kind of injection near your spine.... Your story has made my mind up for sure - I am so sorry that you have had to deal with this bc of a professionals incompetence :( I really hope you are ok and decided to go the legal right and sue if you could - even though it may not seem the right thing to do but your entire life has changed bc of the id**t doctors .... If you haven't I advise you do. Hope all is well hun
