I’ve had that problem for many years whenever I have a shopping bag with paper handles! Unfortunately, now it seems to be happening for no apparent reason (no paper handled shopping bags used overnight while I’m asleep!

I don't know about the itchiness, but scleroderma is a condition that leads to red swollen hands. There's also a rare cancer that can cause red over-heated hands.
I went to a rheumatologist who said that my over heating hands were probably just a twist in dysfunction related to my Raynaud's which causes spasms in the hands in response to cold, resulting in temporary color changes and sometimes pain. It's a blood vessel disorder.
I would get relief by grabbing something from the fridge to hold onto, or if I was out, ordering an icy drink to hold. Doctors have told me to elevate my arms above my head when my hands feel like they can't dissipate heat.

I've have had this issue too since I was a child. It is triggered when shopping or cleaning. They get red, swell so much that I can't close my hand into a fist all the way and so unbearably itchy. But it's an itchiness that doesn't go away from scratching. It's under the skin.

I've narrowed it down to when I'm shopping for jeans. My best guess is that it's an allergy to the dyes/chemicals in jeans. I do my best to avoid touching them before being washed. This is really difficult to do when buying and trying on pants! It would probably benefit me to keep a pair of cotton gloves in my purse for those types of situations.

It also happens when going to a dirtier store or gas station and touching displays or products that aren't cleaned regularly. I try to avoid places like that in general but it can be more difficult when I'm traveling.

In terms of cleaning; it is the dust. When I'm cleaning or touching something that isn't cleaned regularly (garage, back of a closet or an extra dusty surface) it seems to trigger it.

Today it was triggered by just touching the vacuum handle. I'm not sure the rhyme or reason to why it flared up because I use my vacuum several times a week and only rarely does it cause me this allergic reaction.

If I start to feel it come on, I can slow it down and stop it from getting worse by washing my hands with soap under cool water. If I don't address it right away, it comes on really strong to a painful and unbearably itchy degree. I have to drop everything and anything that I'm doing at that point and find a sink. It still takes several minutes after washing for the pain to subside.

I also have this issue going from extreme cold to really warm temperatures but I think that's more common and doesn't have anything to do with allergies. It's just the nature of going from one temperature to another too quickly. If you are really cold and going into a shower, It's better to keep the temperature of the water a little cooler and warm it up gradually so that your body is warming more gradually. This usually helps avoid the problem.

Additionally, I do notice that this happens more in the winter when my skin is dryer. This makes sense to me if my skin is not producing enough natural oils to protect my hands from these allergens.

I'm posting here in hopes that someone else has this problem and has a medical solution. Most people laugh or scoff when I tell them I have a dust allergy.

"Everyone has a dust allergy and sneezes."

It's just not the same thing. I'm not talking about sneezing!

I have started this type of problem. In November my right thumb swelled and was itchy, red and hot. After about 24 hours it would turn a dark purple and go away. I have had it about every two weeks since them, but on different hand and fingers or thumb. The past two weeks I have had it on 4 different fingers. My doctor has done several blood tests that were all negative. The bad thing is it is nerve wrecking and painful. The good thing mine only lasts about 24 hours.
