Higher urine ketone levels do occur in pregnancies due to increased metabolism. It may not be a problem but it could also indicate gestational diabetes if your friend doesn’t already suffer from diabetes.
Gestational diabetes is diabetes that develops in women who are pregnant but don’t suffer from diabetes. High ketone levels appear due to starvation, high protein intake, low carbohydrate intake, due to prolonged vomiting, alcoholism.
Severe stress can also cause high ketone levels in urine.
Your friend’s doctor should realize what is going on and act accordingly to the findings. Her doctor will tell her what to eat, how much in order to avoid the problems and reduce ketone levels.
