I had ACL reconstruction surgery about three years ago. I am still having pain and swelling in my knee and I am unable to squat down or even attempt to run on it. It still swells up on me after walking and I am on my feet all day at work and it swells very bad after a day of work. Any suggestions or ideas on what could be going on? I have done the shot therapy thru my ortho dr., am at a point where I don't know what to do.

I managed to blow out both knees at once. I had one knee done 7 years ago and 8 for the other. Before I went under the knife, my surgeon told me that occasional pain and swelling would happen. That sounded much better than the painful face-plants I was taking each time my knees gave out. Now I have rock solid stability and occasional pain and swelling. It seems a fair price to me. I find it odd that no one else in this thread has mentioned their surgeons warning them. I was warned and everyone I know who's had the same surgery by many different surgeons were also warned. Just sayin'.

My 16 year old daughter tore her ACL November of 2012. She had surgery Jan. 2013 and just celebrated the 1 year post op. She plays Fastpitch Softball and was released to play in September. She gradually started to play again in tournaments at the end of Oct and throughout Nov. Last week were school tryouts(everyday 2-3 hours a day) and by Thursday morning her knee was very tender and swollen right in front of her knee. We were afraid she did something to it being that she played in Oct/Nov and no problems. We went back to the ortho Dr. yesterday and after the exam and X-rays, he says the knee is in good shape. (the swelling went down over the weekend with her being off of it and icing it) He said that the knee is going to pinch and "bite". He told her to ice after workouts/games and take aleve/advil before and/or after. I don't think once your tear up your knee (or anything for that matter), that it will ever be the same. I believe you have to continue to baby it and at times if manageable fight through the pain and/or back off a little.

I tore my ACL in 2011-had ACL reconstruction. 2 years later I joined the Police Academy and was training to get through my run and had excessive pain during and after running. I went back to my surgeon because I had trouble getting the swelling down and he gave me cortisone shots to help with the pain. I also had a lot of popping and cracking in my knee. One day while training I heard a pop and lost stability in my knee. The doctor then sent me for an MRI and the bone plug had popped out and I had to have ACL revision reconstruction. It was caused by wrong placement of the screw hole, causing too much stress on the graft. So don't ignore the pain and swelling...your body is likely trying to tell you something.
