Hi. I am Shahla, 3 days ago my brother (he is 20 years old, student) had a car accident and broke his L3 vertebra. Doctor performed a surgery and he promises that my brother will walk in 6-8 months. I just want to know how he will feel in the future? What we should expect? How will it affect his sexual functionality? Will he walk?

Hi Shahla,

I'm sorry for your brothers injury.

His doctor is your best resource.  He saw the break, saw the damage, and knows how the surgery went.  There are just too many variables to give you an answer.  He may recover fully or have some loss of sensation or weakness, likely his quadriceps or lower.

Wish I had a better answer.

Thank you for your answer. Doctor from Turkey performed a surgery, and surgery went successfully. 4 days left, he feels his legs above the knees (feels knees also) as he felt them before accident, but low part he feels very bad, but feels. For now he cant move his toes. Physical therapist visits him every day and makes therapeutic massage. I am looking for the one, who had the same injury. Just to ask what kind of troubles he will face. Please notify me if you will meet anyone with such injury.

Hi Shahla,

The fact that he can feel below his knees is a very good sign. The nerves are intact. They may have been traumatized or damaged but he still has continuity.

I wish him the best for a full and speedy recovery.

Hi Shahla,

Thanks for the update.

He is making good progress. It does take time so keep encouraging him to make progress. Nerves heal VERY slowly. His feeling should keep getting better in time.

Hope it helps.

Hi,
And one more thing, he has terrible aches in his legs, in the part where heel and ankle joins.

Thank you

That can be part of the recovery, as the nerves recover function and also from not being used - atrophy.

Recovery can be a long process, but he is making GOOD progress. Keep encouraging him and supporting him. The harder he works, the faster and more complete the recovery.

Good luck.

Hi Monik. 7 years left. My brother had some more surgeries on his legs. He damaged his legs in the recovery process, while swimming. He is walking now. And he teaches mathematics at home as he can not work outside. But he still has terrible aches and pains.
He takes strong painkillers. For now he doesn't do any physiotherapy because of his aches. Please advise if there are any strong rehabilitation centers for such injuries and for such aches in the Europe or in the world?
