I can tell you I have always been able to "hold" my liquor...until I started taking Lexapro.

OMG. I have never been so sick after just a few drinks and it did make me almost psychotic, with visual distortion, etc. That's the only way I know how to describe it. And I stayed sick for almost 3 days, with hot flashes, profuse sweating, and nausea.

I haven't touched a drop since and won't. Urk!! But, happily, it is helping very much with my depression and general anxiety. The trade-off is very worth it to me.

This is a great forum. Very informative.

I have been taking Lexapro for about 6 years and drank medium to heavy throughout. It is only recently that I've been blacking out and forgetting entire nights. These blackouts do not happen every time I drink but it is becoming more frequent and doesnt always take a lot of drinking to happen.

I went to a St. Patricks's day festivle for a couple of days where I usually spend most of the day drinking. The first night I noticed I have a very low tolerance and was acting like a crazy drunk. The next morning I felt like I was in completly different world and was really depressed. That night I still drank and was completly zoned out the whole time I was downtown. All I wanted to do was go to bed I couldn't even have fun. The day after that I was still feeling depressed but was able to go home and sleep then I felt alot better the next day.

I am taking 10 mg of lexapro.

According to the Lexapro® (escitalopram oxalate) manufacturer, drinking alcohol while on Lexapro is not recommended. Because medicines and alcohol act upon similar chemicals in the brain, the concern is that Lexapro will increase the effects of alcohol -- whether this is increasing depression symptoms or affecting motor skills.

I started lexapro 5 days ago. I had one weak drink last night and this morning while driving my son to school I believe I had a blackout. I remember turning off the highway, but the next thing I knew I was in front of my kid's school. I don't remember going thru a very busy intersection, which usually requires full focus to get thru safely. I was/am really scared. I hope none of you are driving drunk or even buzzed, or if you have had any blackouts. I am stopping the meds until I talk to my doctor. Was taking 10mg anxiety and depression.

I have had the same response to the medication. I have never vomited from drinking and now I have over 2 drinks of even wine and beer and I vomit profusely and cannot remember the rest of the night. It's terrible, considering I am still in graduate school and younger! I really wish that physicians and/or prescribers would tell patients these adverse effects more often.

Just to add on:

I was on fluoxetine 20mg for about 8 yrs, drinking posed no problems whatsoever. I have a strong constitution and suppose have been drinking alcohol since 12 (not unusual in UK - strong drinking culture).

Am now on Lexapro 30mg, had my first black out/memory loss experience in my life - did stuff I had no idea I'd done and really quite out of character. Luckily I was with my bf (it was bedroom stuff) but honestly I could have done anything with anyone and had no idea about it. That was after some cocktails. Granted, they were not bar measures, but this would not normally do that to me. Also, more recently, it just made me pass out and unable to walk after a few whiskies (my drink)...
My doc says drinking is fine but am questioning that....

So, a question for you more experienced people:

I started taking Lexapro when I was 13 and because I was afraid of what the result might be I never drank at all until the last few months. I've drunk moderately, usually only 3-4 drinks max over several hours. Last night, though, being Cinco de Mayo, I drank a beer, 2 margaritas and a shot of tequila. I felt fine, not even dizzy or drunk or even really tipsy... and then suddenly I guess the last shot hit me and I got so nauseous I threw up.

My confusion is around the fact that I really don't have much experience with alcohol. Shouldn't I at least have a little WARNING before I get sick? Although I'm a relatively small girl, I really don't think that should have been enough to make me vomit. I felt fine right up until about a minute before I threw up. Is it the Lexapro's interaction causing this nausea?

Also, question #2: When I drink, although I've noticed i seem to get VERY dizzy VERY quickly, I don't notice the emotional effects that alcohol is supposed to have. I often have to stop drinking because I'm so dizzy, even though at that point I don't even feel a little bit giddy or silly. I generally feel completely cool and rational, and yet can't see straight. Has anyone else experienced this on Lexapro?

Thank you! :-)

I have never taken any type off SSRI in the past. Within the last two months, I decided to try Lexapro 10 mg for my anxiety which, would in turn, help my insomonia.
I've been through college:) ..and although I'm not a huge drinker now, I can definitely hold my alcohol. I've always been the one who was aware of where my friends were, who they were talking to, and what was going on when we were out at the bars/clubs.
Last weekend, I had three glasses of champagne (small glasses) and got sick without any warning. I felt so drunk so suddenly, I could barely stand. I also had periods of blackouts through out the night.
I didn't make the connection to Lexapro until this weekend. I went out for dinner and a drinks with friends, definitely driking more than usual - maybe 6 drinks over 10 hours. I completely blacked out, acted out of character which I have never done in my life. This was so scary and surprising to myself and my good friends that I am cutting down Lexapro immediately and will be off this med ASAP.

I started taking 10mg of lexapro 2 weeks ago. I went out a couple of nights ago, had about 8 drinks and ended up vomitting and getting carried home. I was completely out of it. I couldn't talk or walk for myself. I was fine and then all of a sudden it hit me and the last thing I remember was getting myself to the bathroom. I was just lucky I had friends there to take care of me.

I had the same experience, drank even less than I normally do, on lexapro about 10 days, was fine, then remember nothing, ended up in the emergency room because I couldn't stop getting sick. Will definitely not be drinking again, it was horrible.

OMG!! I just did this a few weeks ago. I was researching about lexapro and seeing why i got so sick. I was going to go to the hospital. Now I really didnt think that teh day after I drank I would feel this way. Monday night I drank until 330 am. I drink a lot and can hold my liqour(guess I do drink too much. I had about a half of a fifth of vodka, and two glasses of wine and a beer). The next day I was slightly hungover but wasn't sick. I took lexaro at 12pm thinking it would be fine since it was the next day and didn't even really think alcohol would agitate it. WRONG.
The room started spinning, I threw up on mysef and all over the house wherever I was, violently and uncontrolably. I forgot how I got upstairs! I actually forgot the walk up the stairs. Incredible. Out of the corner of my eyes things were moving and I saw bugs! Not to mention my bf said i was acting crazy like very angry and violent which I have no recollection of cursing him out or breaking things, my things! in my room.
Needless to say I will never ever make this mistake again.

I don't know. . . would having no memory after a few drinks be a really BAD thing? Perhaps it's a positive side reaction.

This has to be a joke. Of course not being in control or having no memory is not a good idea. If you're ever drinking so much that you can't remember what happened, that's really bad! You were joking, right?
