Hi! I'm a 16-year-old boy. Only recently I have realized that I have a habit of holding in stool. When I got the urge, I would just ignore it and have a bowel movement the next day or the day after that. I've been reading a lot about this on the Internet and I'm pretty confused. I've read this can cause constipation, diverticulas, rectal prolapse, incontinence etc. I'm just so scared that I've already caused myself diverticulas and will get incontinence/something other. I don't know exactly how long this has been going, but I'd say at least 5 years. At the moment I have a bowel movement approximately every other day, but I rarely get a "proper" urge and thus I need to strain/push. What should I do? I don't exercise very much and I could eat more fiber, so I guess I'd need to start here. I'm just really scared that I've caused myself bad damage and will end up with a lifelong problem. Thanks if you could answer, that would be very much appreciated.

I'd suggest increasing fiber intake.
