Hiya!

Total thyroidectomy can cause damage to the nerve that controls the vocal cords, leading to hoarseness or complete loss of voice. Additionally, the surgery can cause inflammation and scarring of the larynx, which can also affect the ability to speak. If you have had a total thyroidectomy, it is important to follow up with your doctor in order to monitor your vocal function and manage any potential complications.

My wife had a total thyroidectomy back in 2014. And she regained her voice in about 3 weeks, per her words.

Depending on the cause, your doctor may suggest a variety of treatments, including speech therapy, medications, or even surgery. In some cases, the voice may return after a few weeks of rest. Your doctor may also recommend lifestyle changes such as avoiding smoking and limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption.

in my opinion a General Surgeon may not be the one you want to do surgery on the thyroid. My daughter had hers removed in 2015 and we used an otolargynlogist that had done thyroid surgeries for 30 plus years. She had no problems at all. Sorry you are having these problems.
