I am one month into my cycle for another long distance race on March 28 and I was talking about my current plan. It involves an up and down mileage pattern where my long mileage week will be 40+ and going up in by 2 miles every other week. On the alternate week I was planning on going 36 - 40 mpw. This is the plan I used for the Jax marathon and it seemed to work pretty good for me.
My friend says that I should drop my off week so I end up 10 miles below my high week.
What do you think?

On a 3-mo build up like this, I'd say having 2-mpw increments is easy enough to work with. If you said you were taking 10% jumps each week, then I'd say one week a month would be a good step back with the 10 less mile week. But as it sounds, working up through the 40s and dropping back to 36-40 works for me.

I ran with a woman that ran 80 one week....then 40 the next. 8O ....she was being coached by a former 10k olympian. She said the hardest part is that she was constantly hungry during her 40 mile week. Of course she actually LOST weight and then went on to beat me by 3 minutes in the marathon.

Thanks Everyone, based on my runs this week which is one of my long weeks I feel good. Next week when I drop a little bit will be a good gauge. This whole pattern worked well for my last marathon so I think I will stick with it.
