Hi. My uncle was diagnosed with mesothelioma. He worked as a carpenter and he was exposed to asbestos. He said that was the cause of his problem. Is there a link between mesothelioma and asbestos, or he is just saying that?

Hi. Yes, there is a great link. Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by breathing in loose or ingesting asbestos fiber. This cancer affects lungs, chest and abdominal cavities. It has a long latency period. My Dad worked as electrician in the `60s and he quit the job because he thought asbestos was dangerous. He was right. Many people in industry were exposed to asbestos on a daily base, and for a long period of time, these days. Luckily, my Dad stopped working with asbestos. I am sure he would now have a problem if he didn`t.
