Hi everybody, Oh my goodness, Metformin = burning throat. It all started a few weeks ago when my metformin dose was increased. I have acid reflux terribly. I had to stop taking metformin all together. My doctor put me on losepine for a week to help with excess acid production. I'm back on metformin now. All I've been able to eat or oatmeal and the burning throat is back again. I'm drinking a lot of water to see if that helps. Has metformin caused my acid reflux? I never had it before. Any one have any suggestions on what to do? Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, Yeah, many of us have reported heartburn when taking mefformin so I guess it's a common side effect. You might want to talk to your doctor about your acid reflux and see what she/he as to say. I went to the store and got some OTC Prilosec and that worked like a champ. So far I've been able to take it once in the morning and that seems to take care of the heart burn. There are other OTC heart burn medications available as well but I've only used Prilosec. I don't think there are any complications with taking Prilosec and metformin to my knowledge but you might want to make sure. There are prescription medications available as well so you might want to talk to your doctor about that as they might work better for you depending on your particular situation. I was just wondering if you had any other side effects besides acid reflux. I know a number of people report diarrhea and nausea and some report dizziness. I never had any of those problems but I understand that the other symptoms can be very uncomfortable. In my case, I've had heart burn ever since I can remember so I guess the metformin added insult to injury.
