Hi everyone, I live in a hot climate and I have to carry my insulin with me. I particularly worry about carrying insulin in the car. Is there a way to keep it cool, say like a mini fridge to store insulin? Does anyone out there have this problem? For the moment I'm using one of those gel packs and putting it in a hand held tote but it is really kind of to big. Does anyone have any ideas about this? One of my friends mentioned that there is a company that makes a cool storage device just for insulin but I haven't been able to find one anywhere. I can imagine it is expensive but I'd still like to see one. Thanks.

Hello, there are all kinds of possibilities to keep your insulin cool from simple cold packs to battery operated mini fridges. It's depends on how much money you want to spend. A really nice mini fridge is the Medi-Fridge MR11X and this company has a couple of different designs at slightly different prices. This mini fridge has a temperature display and is specifically designed for diabetics or any one that required injectable medicine. This mini fridge can be used in the car plugged if used with a 12v power cord and it can be plugged into either 110v or 240v. It comes with a 12v auto power cord and a world-wide power cord. This power cord can be used with a universal adapter. It's light weight (1 and ¼ pounds). This is great if you travel a lot or it can be used at work. This mini fridge uses thermoelectric technology. It does not have a compressor and doesn't require gas. This is a bit pricey depending on where you buy it ($50 and above).

If you have something cheaper in mind, consider the Frio Duo Large insulin cooling and insulating case. It doesn't require ice packs or refrigeration. All you do is immerse the inner pouch in cold water, dry it and go. Medications can stay cool for over 2 days and all you have to do is soak it again in cold water to reactivate it. It can also protect insulin from freezing in the winter. The case can hold up to six vials with syringes or four insulin pens. This runs about $25 and up depending on where you buy it.
