I've suffered with excessive phlegm in my throat ever since I hit puberty, so bad that it causes my to gag occasionally, especially when I have a cold. I'm 21 now.

Here's what I've found, from doctors, diagnosis, research, and experience:
-Anxiety about the phlegm and the fear of gagging will only trigger your body to make more phlegm and make the condition worse.
-Everyday stress release (like deep breathing) is a must
-Drinking water is very important for your health, and will thin the mucus so it won't get stuck in your throat
-Expectorants will also thin the mucus, but antihistamines and cold medicines often can make phlegm worse! When you're sick, try to take an expectorant only, and after day 5 or so of your cold.
-Avoid dairy, alcohol, and soda when your phlegm is at a peak. These will make it worse.

TLDR: getting nervous about the phlegm will make it worse. drink a lot of water.

we are all in this fight against phlegm together

Try a vegan diet. Raw red onion incorporated into your meal, I recommend those to be chopped into little pieces and lots of water. I think its worth a try

That's exactly what it is! I suffered for years. The acid began to erode my esophagus. I've had several stretching procedures now where they've dilated my esophagus to open it back up, because the erosion was causing scar tissue and thickening of my esophageal lining. The only way to ensure that it doesn't continue is to change your diet! I was doing great since the last procedure in March 2016. Started eating spicy foods and drinking soda again, and wouldn't you know it, it's back!

I went through exactly what you are going through and it was scary, my trick was simply chewing gum, sometimes even at night. Eventually I learned it was my sinuses so I would take a great bit of time in the morning clearing myself out and you might also benefit from research calcium build up on your tonsils.......

I went to my GP with throat plegm causing gagging vomitting followed by nose blowing sneezing and forehead sweating. He diagnosed this condition as Silent Reflux and prescribed oprazamole (sic) the same that is prescribed for people who have burning reflux. I took it fora few weeks - no change.
Recently I ceased taking an anti depressant DESVENLAFaxine. I was warned you need to wean of these things, but I went cold turkey.
I have not had a gagg for four or five days since!!!!!!!!! I still have a little pleghm buildup but greatly reduced. I feel strongly that there is a connection!!!!!

I've had phlem build up for more than 10 years. Doesn't take away my appetite like some others here. It'll get stuck back in my throat and have to gag and basically throw up to get it out sometimes. What does work for me, honestly is some marijuana.

Hi, i have this issue with retching, or dry heaving. doctors and specialists don,t know the cause but recently i have made the link that my dry heaving is caused by phlegm in the back of my throat. I must carry water around all the time, because it was the only thing that would stop or prevent heaving. when my stomach heaves 6-7 times before i get to water, man it hurts.. i know its coming when i have mild nausea 10 seconds before. SO, i realized when i was without water, a strong throat cough while at the same time "horking" for lack of a better word, dislodges the phlegm and the heaving does not happen. hope it helps. is it allergy related who knows, but when i am around dust, or fibreglass insulation it triggers a heave . it sucks, but knowing i can dislodge it,helps.
