Hi, a bone scan shows abnormalities in the bones. Maybe your child had some injury or specific disease is suspected, so doctors want to have it checked. It is done in nuclear medicine department, and the scan involves one injection, but apart from that, it is painless. A 'gamma camera' is used to pick up radioactivity. Radioactive substance called a radionuclide is injected into your bloodstream to enable detection of radioactivity. But, it does you no harm as the amount is very small and it is all secreted out of the body.
