Hi all,

Wonder if you can help, but I am a 29 year old female, skinny arms and legs, yet my stomach is so badly swollen (It measures 40") that people constantly ask me when my baby is due. (Which really upsets me.)

I am a strict vegetarian, eat FAIRLY healthy (I like to drink wine an have the odd curry.) and have cut down on my bread intake from about 6 slices a day to 1-2 a day and I switched my pasta and rice to the brown varieties.

My bowel movements used to be 1-2 times a day but over the past year or two has gone up to 3-4 times a day instead.

Sometimes when I eat, at lunchtimes mainly, half an hour after eating I get the most crippling stomach pains and they are sometimes followed by horrendous, painful, cramping diarrhoea, which is so bad that I am actually sobbing on the toilet in agony! My rectum feels like it's burning for an hour or so afterwards too. I rarely get constipated.

Obviously the body doesn't process my food in half an hour, so why am I on the toilet in pain so soon after eating?

My Nan died of bowel cancer in her 40s, so I do check my motions, but wouldn't know if my stools had blood in them anyway as when I see something red it could be peppers, kidney beans or beetroot for expamle.

I also belch a LOT too, they are tiny belches that don't even make a sound, I didn't notice that I did it, but my husband pointed out that I do it all the time, so I counted them one hour and did one every 2-3 minutes in that particular hour! Though to be fair I do not belch CONSTANTLY.

I asked my doctor about IBS, he just shrugged and said "maybe." so I asked at the chemist store and the pharmacist said he would not give me IBS pills unles sthe doctor had diagnosed it.

I recently went to the doctor again about my distended abdomen, as people asking me when my baby is due is having a really upsetting effect on me, he felt around my stomach and said he could not feel any blockages or growths and said that I must be unlucky and carry my fat there and nowhere else and referred me to a dietician... Who I am still waiting to be seen by... Though I did speak to her on the phone and she said it MAY be a food intolerence.

I have not lost any weight or anything lately and am only 4lbs over my ideal BMI in weight.

Not sure what else I can do or try, but it makes my life a misery.

Can anyone offer advice please or does anyone have the same problem?

Thanks.

Hi I am experiencing the exact problem! I am so tired of people asking if I am pregnant, it is really wearing on my self-esteem. Please tell me what your diagnosis is when you get one. I have seen so many docters and no one can tell me anything. I too think it may be an intolerance to some kind of food I am eating.

Hi bradders, my name is Rose, and I would like to get familiar with your problem. How long has it been since this started happening? I also have an aunt that has similar symptoms, and she doesn't know what to do. I suggested her, as I would suggest you too, that the best thing to do is to go and see a specialist about your bloated stomach, and run all tests if necessary, blood and stool, full body examination in order to establish a proper diagnosis. It could be an allergic reaction, or a hernia. Let us know what you decided.

Hi, I saw your posting and thought I would pass this along to you! Your problem definitely sounds like IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrom) and can EASILY be fixed! Try this: Go to your local grocery store and get Activia yogurt and start eating 1 container in the morning and 1 in the afternoon or everning and see if your symptoms disappear. That is what I did. Not only will you feel better and your symptoms go away, but you can lose weight on that stuff becuz it raises your metabolism! It is wonderful!

Hope this helps!

yes it does sound like IBS I was diagnosed years ago for this at the time I was given a prescrip for what was called Belladonna (now off the market) it worked like a charm and I only used it as needed. For the past few years however I haven't used the prescript and controlled it with diet until the last few months. I had to take two strong courses of antibiotics to fight off a sinus infection and here I am suffering again. They tried Bentyl that was awful felt like I was always in a fog then they put me on another med but it also made me feel worse. Then my Doc said go by some acidopholus at the health food store. There is a chance you have an inbalance of bacteia in your intestines. The activia contains the same stuff but this is more potent. I just started taking it and I am hoping for the best. I did get some relief from the activia too but I am also lactose intolerant so after a while the yogurt would start to bother me too. I am in hopes taking this probiotic in tablet form will work. Be careful though you need 1-3 billion mg for it to be affective.

Good luck I will let you know how the probiotic works for me.

to bradder33 (the original post),
symptoms may be caused by an intolerance of gluten.
research celiac disease.

Oh my god! Thank you! This is SO interesting, I have SO many of the other symptoms, which would seem to not even be related, such as bruising easily, exhaustion, elevated liver enzymes, headaches, joint and bone pain, bouts of depression.. I am amazed by this. I really am.

I was eventaly diagnosed last year with IBS, Anti spasmodics do little to help, so instead I take a packed of Immodium a week just to be able to function, though last week I bought so probitocs and prebiotics pills and charcoal tablets, I will get peppermint oil tablets too.

I am going to go back to my doctor about this. Thank you.

Check out the Coeliac UK website. It's worth checking with your doctor because the symptoms sound very similar.

You all are wasting your time with Bentyl, Librax,Anxiolitics,Diet. There is a drug that is approved for people with IBS and "Diarrhea". Side effect is that is causes constipation as you can expect, so if you suffer constipation "It is contraindicated" The drug is "LOTRONEX" only some GI doctors are registered to prescribe it. This drug works in 2 weeks and is very, very effective. I almost assure you it will change your life. Talk to your gastro.

Hi, u might like to take a look at the FODMAPS diet-it's been clinically proven :) I have similar problems but have got rid of the nasty pain more or less by cutting out onions and garlic...see the FODMAPS list. Brown pasta and rice is actually worse for producing gas. Your dr is fobbing u off-ask to be checked for coeliac-take the Nhs choices page from online saying who should be tested, especially with young bowel csncer in your family. Guess u can wait for dietican first. If u want to prove that it's bloating then measure your waist do u can show it varies a lot-ie is not fat. If its constant bloating then u need to be checked for various solid problems including rarely ovarian cancer...but only if it's constant! My dr gave me anti spasmodics too. Good luck! X

Every morning & every night, make a paste of HONEY & CINNAMON, and add boiled water to it. Drink this twice daily & notice a huge difference in your health.
