i started taking doxyciclin about 7 days ago. Wasnt even thinking about it but it was sunny and i was outside for a long time today. I was in the garden section of Home Depot and i thought i was getting water over sprayed on me from someone watering the plants there. when i looked around there was noone. Felt this sensation on the tops of my hands towards the back of them and up the forearms. It didnt hurt, was just a light needles and pins sensation. Swore it felt like cold water sprinkling. then later i felt it on the tops of my cheeks too. I started freaking out because they say if Your having a heart attack your arm tingles. I called a nurse and shes pretty sure its the doxycycline and my reaction with the sun. Im not taking anymore of that stuff. Felt kind of wierd tonight but i dont want it hurting tommorrow  , ,, , WEIRD STUFF!!

Thanks for all the posts! I have been on doxy for Lymes EM rash for two weeks- have another four weeks to go. 200mg/BID.
Cold water sprinkling sensation on hands and face. The pins and needles sensation. Happened after sun exposure. And significant blisters on hands. Severe blistering and pain on lips. Touching them increases pins and needles feeling. Very limited sun exposure, but significant symptoms.

Stopping doxy and asking doctor to change meds. Hopeful this will subside and resolve itself soon.
I've tried every homeopathic remedy and herbal remedy and OTC remedy that I could try. Nothing helped yet.

Hi--Did you get better after you stopped the medication? I too had this happen after limited sun exposure at the end of my first of 5 weeks on Doxycycline for possible Lymes or Rickettsia. No one suggested I stop/change the medicine or seemed to know that this was a side effect--even an infectious disease specialist. I have been off Doxycycline for a week as of today. Things have improved dramatically, but my hands and feet are definitely not back to "normal" at all and I am feeling like they may never be. Before this, I used to go on 3-5 mile hikes a few time each week. Now my feet get tired with normal daily life and it makes my legs ache. The same with my hands and arms, driving any real distance makes my hands hurt and then my arms ache. It's a real drag. They say to give it another week before I worry about it, but they also say there is no cure if it doesn't go away, but maybe medicine to ease the symptoms.

Has anyone had this pins and needles issue resolved? I took doxy for a week and on the 5th day I too had pins and needles, and I still do.
Causing me extreme anxiety.

I'm having the same issue after taking this medication. How long does the burning sensation last before it finally stops?

I really wish more of the people that posted here would follow up to say whether or not their symptoms went away eventually. So many of the posts above ask that question but I did not see any answers. I took Doxy for 12 days before suddenly there was a tingling, pins and needles sensation in my hands. It was funny today, when I got up I hardly noticed it, but it's gotten worse since I got up. Also about 8 days into the Doxy I noticed an increase in the ringing in my ears which is still present, I've always had some ringing but now it's noticeably worse. Lastly, I had some pretty bad diarrhea that I learned to control with probiotics to a degree I could continue my dosage. I was supposed to take the Doxy for 14 days, but I stopped on day 12 when the tingling started.

Couldn't figure out how to edit my 1st post, so I am replying to it. Talked to a nurse. When I told her about the diarrhea, she said, "That's likely the cause. The diarrhea messes up your electrolyte balance. Your potassium is probably off. It should fix itself in a few days as you re-hydrate. Eat a banana for some potassium." We shall see. I'll report back here if I find out more, and I will certainly report if the symptoms resolve.

Hi, you don't really give enough information but often when taking doxy there is diarrhea. This can cause a common electrolyte imbalance. A tingling sensation is common with that. Doxy is especially known for causing tingling, like a pins and needles sensation, and this commonly with a sensation of coldness in the hands especially during and after washing your hands. I do not understand the reason this occurs. I've had this and the tingling/pins and needles sensation went away after a few days but I've still got the cold hands sensation. I've STILL not been able to talk to the doctor about it even though I called their office a week ago and told them about the adverse reaction.

I went through the same symptoms everyone else has and it was a year ago. The Doctor was going to send me to a neurologist so I did some internet investigation on my own and found a similar site to this. As I said it was a year ago that I took Doxy for a tick bite and the symptoms from the sun exposure lasted about a month after finishing taking the drug. Makes you nervous but the symptoms of numbness and tingling will go away. By all means when they say avoid the sun then avoid the sun completely!

Thank you for your post. The fact it went away for you is excellent news! My tingling also pretty much went away but there is still a little tiny bit. Only thing is when I wash my hands in warm or cool water, my hands feel like ice. It's not a terrible thing, I can live with it. But some of these people's posts were just terrible, it effected their sleep etc. I think this forum is very important. For most people it appears that the symptoms do get better over time.
