During my years of graduate and clinical study in veterinary medicine in Queensland, Australia, at the School of Veterinary Medicine, we experienced the clinical admission of a number of housecats (various breeds and crossbred cats) suffering from all stages of generalized ossification of voluntary musculature. ALL of these feline patients had a history of having been fed (by badly misguided owners) a diet of ONLY raw beef liver (because the cats "liked it", according to owners). The livers of cattle concentrate vitamin D so that when fed an exclusive diet of raw liver, the cats suffered hypervitaminosis D, which resulted in deposition of dietary calcium (from cow's milk they were also fed)- deposition in their voluntary muscle tissue, evantually always leading to inability to move their limbs, followed by death. Cooking of the liver denatures the vitamin D as it is heat-labile, but liver alone is a very poor and incomplete diet. It should not be fed. This was NOT "genetic".
