The last three days i've had a sharp pain under my right rib cage. It hurts to breathe, and it hurts when i'm just sitting. About three to five times a day, I'll get a really really sharp pain under my rib cage when breathing and it feels like a big bubble that will only go away if i take a really deep breath, but it hurts too much to breathe or even move. It happens if I laugh or if im laying down and switch positions too fast.. I can't take a deep breath laying down either or the "bubble" will come. I can't breathe hardly at all when it happens. i have to take really quick and short breaths.. it has happened before, but never as bad as the last three days and it's never left me sore. I don't have much of an appetite, and my urine has a strong odor. Ive had a history of bladder infections and a few kidney infections, also i had swollen kidneys and a swollen spleen about four years ago. :-( so i'm not sure if it has any relation to either of those. If anyone has any ideas as to whats wrong with me id greatly appreciate the info. Thanks!

I started getting this dull, sometimes sharp, pain on the left side of my body, beneath my lung, back in December of this past year. I've had to leave work early because of it, and take pain pills. I went to the hospital, had an EKG done and a chest x-ray, but nothing showed up. It lasted for a while, on and off, sometimes barely noticeable at all, and then it pretty much stopped.

After this happened, I figured out that I had a bladder condition called IC or Interstitial Cystitis. It has something to do with the bladder's lining and symptoms are pretty much "bladder infection" after "bladder infection". But what you said made me wonder if the chest pain and the IC are connected at all.

However, now it is June and the pain in my lung is back. Lately my chest has been feeling heavy and uncomfortable. And now it hurts more when I take a deep breath than it did the last time i felt this way. I'm worried that I have lung cancer, because I do smoke cigarettes. I'm only nineteen, I'm not sure if that matters. I'm also a bit of a hypocondriac, to be honest, I just don't know what this is and I wish that it'd get cleared up and go away soon.

Good luck to you.

Love and Light,
Jillian.

These all sound like collapsed lungs.

The fact that you smoke doesn't help things, and cancer is always a possibility, however, sometimes a slightly collapsed lung is hard to distinguish on films, and a slow leak has just now gotten bad enough to notice again. I would get some more x-rays done, and if that doesn't show anything, go for more detail. Maybe MRI or CT scans.

I have asthma, and my boyfriend has had a collapsed lung. Lung issues are a daily thing with us. We're both really fit, thin younger people in our twenties, and I think that has helped. We surf, and I'm a competitive show jumper in the equestrian sports. I know that skinny, active people have a higher risk of collapsed lungs, and I'm sure a smoker would as well.

Your description sounds EXACTLY like what I'm experiencing, including the bubble effect, which I haven't seen many other people write about over the internet. I was wondering (if by any chance you see this) how this ended and if you ever discovered what it was.

Sounds like what I have.......

Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). It causes sharp pain in the costosternal joint — where your ribs and breastbone are joined by rubbery cartilage. Pain caused by costochondritis may mimic that of a heart attack or other heart conditions.

Your doctor might refer to costochondritis by other names, including chest wall pain, costosternal syndrome and costosternal chondrodynia. When the pain of costochondritis is accompanied by swelling, it's referred to as Tietze syndrome.

Most cases of costochondritis have no apparent cause. In these cases, treatment focuses on easing your pain while you wait for costochondritis to resolve on its own.

I have the bubble part too and at night it hurts, it's like someone is taking something hot and is pushing it in my chest, under my rib. Although I've had it for three years now, so if it was something serious I'd know by now.

it is always best to see your physician first instead of guessing what is wrong. if you have seen your doctor and they are still baffled it is possible it is radiating pain from the thoracic area. Many people have an elevated or depressed rib in that area, just see your doctor first

I'm not a doctor, and don't have much knowledge on such things, but I just had this pain under my left ribcage, exactly what the first post was describing. I researched it, and found the article and there is good advice. Worked for me.

"remember, the key to getting rid of the pain quickly is to just work up the courage to take that deep breath, scream in pain, and be done with it."

I've had the similar thing happen to once in a while for about 10 years now, but my doctor has never figured out what it was. The sudden sharp pain feels like it's just in the upper left part of my chest, underneath my breast tissue but quite as deep as my internal organs (lung or heart). Like for you, it will only go away if I breath in or out really deeply, so I force myself to suffer through it and keep breathing in deeply until I feel it "click" away. I've read that it may be caused by inflammation of the tissue, cartilage or muscle between your ribs, something called costochondritis apparently.

Good luck!

i get this strong stabbing pain on the right side of my body under my ribs. it will be totally fine and i will breath in a feel a little vibration (best way to describe it) and then within an hour or so it will be a stabbing pain and last anywhere from a half hour to a day. but then it goes away and im fine for a while until one day, like today.. it acts up again- i took some tylenol and the pain went down but when i breath in i can feel it is aggrivated still. if i try and stretch the area it hurts too, kinda mmakes me keel over and just relax when it gets bad... i went and got an ultrasound last year when itwas h urting and they didnt see anything wrong. wierd, any thoughts?

I, too have had this wierd pinching bubble-like pain for years. On and off. I've only ONCE ever heard of anyone else I personally knew that had it. We referred to them as our "mini heart attacks" - as un-funny as that is. To relieve the pain, I'd usually build up courage to take that one deep breath to stop it - it goes away after a painful "snap" or "pop." I've never had it medically checked out, though.

However... I haven't exp. that in a while... and in the past 2-3 months I've now had this very wierd pain only occur a couple times that I wonder if it is related (happened last night - that's why I'm searching about it)? The painful area is just under the lower inside curved edge of my right rib cage. It feels like an area no larger than a child's fist... very sharp pain, very tender... if I massage it helps, but not completely... wondered if it was muscle-related... don't know of that costochondritis (since that's a connective tissue thing and mine is more in the middle of the rib)... so... very wierd. Both times I've woke up in the night, in pain, laying on stomach is impossible. After I finally fall asleep with pain... wake up. nothing but a very little risidual tenderness.

I'm thinking of making a dr appt... just wondering if anyone has an ideas of things to ask about other than that costochondritis?

It is possible the pain you've described could be gas getting in under your rib cage, which can be very painful. Usually if this is the problem you will also be aware of having a lot of gas in your stomach too, but not always.
Many people aren't aware you can have gas pains in/around your rib area.
But if gas is the problem, the best way to help get rid of it is to move around and walk as much as possible, take slow deep breaths and hold it as long as possible, then let out the air slowly, even though it will be painful at first.
(Lack of activity and being in bed for long periods will cause gas to build up inside.)

If it continues, it's best to be checked by a doctor to find the cause of the pain.

I also have this sharp pain just under the bottom rib... sometimes on both sides at once. my physician friend said it is gas and moving around helps, but i go to the gym every day and still have this pain every few months. the last few times, i remember the sharp pain from the bottom of my ribs some how coincided with a sharp pain around my collar bone. so when i take a deep breath, it feels like i've been stabbed in the side and in the neck... this is so frustrating.
