Its so soon I'm still waiting for the bills to arrive. I have a $2500 in network deductible and a $5,000 out of network. So far all bills have been paid -$2,500 but I'm still waiting to see what bc/bs does with the actual surgeon. I hope they count him in nnetwork too as there is no one else taht could do this surgery at this time. This team does not work for discounted fees though so I know I will owe some after bc/bs is done with there determination. But I was in so much misery the past 5 years I weighed the options with my wife and we decided to go ahead. Well I hopw get good news

Ross,

I called New Jersey today, spoke with Heather, she informed me that Dr. Kaufman would call me Thursday. It looks like they want to use the phrenic pacemaker. I had a chance to get that procedure in 2003. I can't remember why I didn't get it.

Probably because I couldn't fly at that time. I am hoping that I could be a candidate for a operation similar to the one like you had.

I have just been newly diagnosed with a paralized diaphragm and phrenic nerve. Do any of you have pleuric type pain in the right side of your neck from your ear to shoulder that hurts like pleurisy? When this pain starts on me, it is hard for me to take a deep breath without severe pain. I have had severe back and neck injuries in the past from car accidents where my car was high from behind at a high rate of speed. Any help or advise would be helpful.
Thanks.

Hi Guest,

Regarding your situation, I'm not familiar with your diagnosis. I suggest that you go to a thoracic surgeon to see, what exactly is wrong.
Are your phrenic nerves paralyzed? Is the right and left side of the diaphragm elevated. It's possible that the phrenic nerve on both sides could have been severed. Keep in touch

Good luck

Joe,

I'm sure there is a good reason for a different proceedure! As I have said the Dr. is interested in what gives you the best chance at getting good results for you. He must have seen somthing in your records that make you a better candidate for phrenic pacing. Regardless of the proceedure making your quality of life better is what is important! Right! I wish you nothing but the best. Ross

Ross,

Thanks for getting back to me, Dr. Kaufman got back to me Wed. We had a pleasant conversation, I'm under the assumption that the pacemaker is the right way to go. I explained to the Dr. that I'm not looking for miracles

We will be in touch in about another month or so, looking for a July or early Aug. operation. Should I hear of anything within the near future, I'll keep in touch. Thanks for your help

Ciao

November, 2009 I had lung surgery to remove a nodule that was diagnosed cancer in the first stage. As a result of this surgery I have a left paralyzed vocal cord and left paralyzed diaphram. What are the chances of recovery for both?

I was so glad to find this site. My diaphragm was paralyzed when I was a crime victim, and I never knew why I seemed to be in such poor condition re: walking a mile or less. Learning what those of you on site have done to adapt is so encouraging

Stacey! I'm glad you found this site too! You do not mention how long ago your injury occurred but I'm finding more and more peole are getting help. I have recently started to increase my exercise activity to a new level. I am not limited by the distance I can walk however running is another story. If you ahve read my posts you probably know that I could only run aprox 50 ft and was out of breath ( down from the 3 miles I used to run). I had to use a bi-pap tp breath at night and could not lay on my back aithout feeling like I was suffocating. Due to my work schedule and rural area I live I have not been able to run outside but I have been doing stairs now. Right now I have worked my self up to 21 flights both up and down. I also started to do push ups every morning which I could not do due to breathing complications. It has been 7 months since my surgery and it has changed my life. I hope you pursue this to find out if you can be helped. If you call or email advanced reconstructive surgery they will take your info and Dr. Kaufman will propably call you himself. Good luck I hope all works out for you.

What a blessing to find this site! I too have been diagnosed with paralyzed diaphragms - 100% right and 70% left - caused when I popped my neck moving furniture! I have been wanting to get some other opinions as my Docs (top in their respective fields) have run out of options. My accident occurred 4/09 and since then life has changed dramatically. My BIPAP and I have become very good friends!
Has anyone on this post explored having their diaphragm(s) expanded via surgery? My pulmonary Dr gave me the name of a Dr who has done a procedure that, the way I understand things, attaches it to the rib cage in an extended position. Have any of you heard or tried such a procedure?

Also - has anyone had their phrenic nerve tested - my neurologist is hesitant to test it as he doesn’t want to risk the chance of collapsing my lung.

FYI I had the opportunity to partake in some PT and OT and therapists told me not to take deep breaths before bending over to tie my shoes etc. Statistically I guess it increases your chance of a heart attack: 0 they taught me to exhale on exertion ie when bending over and then inhaling as you rise - pretty contra to my natual process but makes sense when you think about it

Looking forward to hearing about everyone’s success in dealing with this unfortunate malady!

Hey All, I was so greatfull to find this site yesterday. I started having breathing problems around Jan 2010 where i couldnt breath when i lied down, to the point I went to hospital an they concluded it was my highblood pressure medication an sent me home. I thought maybe i needed to loss few pounds an start to excersize more. Been living like this for well over year did not look forward to sleep an was completely sleep deprived. To make matter worse i am a fireman in city of Chicago an new my endurance was completely gone. My Doctor about 2 weeks ago said my breathing problem could just be in head. I was schedule for a phrenic nerve test last week an it came back my left nerve doesnt work . i had a sleep cpap in my closet for over 4 years because I couldnt wear it because the exhaust vavle was set to high. So i did some research an had the internal setting brought down an oh my GOD had my first good night sleep a week ago. Now all where do i go from here. Nick

Nick,
There are several tests that you should have to determine waht is going on. See a pulmanologist. A sniff test will show if your diaphragm is paralyzed and a pulmonary function test. If you have read any of my posts there is a Dr. that specializes in this type of problem. I too slept with a cpap for 6 years. I no longer use one. I could not sleep on my back now I can. I joined a gym to take things up a notch. I am doing a 4 mph pace over a 30 minute period. 11 months ago I could not run 50 feet. Its not a marathon by any means but I have been able to hit short bursts of up to 10 mph. If you are interested read my other posts or contact me. There is hope for many that have this problem - Ross
