I'm 32 and completely addicted to ice. Infact, some days, it's all I can think about. I know I am anemic - I was given pills but they made me really constipated and then I just forgot to keep taking them. So, here I am again, eating ice. It's to the point where I'm closet eating ice at work. WTF is up with that?

My biggest... issue... I guess that's the best word - is - I want the ice to freeze to my tongue before I eat it. WHY!? I must be some sort of freak. If it doesn't freeze to my tongue, then I'm just not satisfied and have to dig and hunt for the perfect piece of frozen ice.

Does anyone else have this weird urge to freeze ice to their tongue, and then eat the ice?

Sounds like you are really struggling with this ice thing. If I were you I would go to a naturopath and find a different, natural way to get iron into your blood. All of us ice eaters have different variations on our ice cravings but find a way to get help with this so you don't have to live your life around it.

I am also a fellow ice chomper. It started with my first pregnancy that I started getting this unbelievable craving to chomp on ice. This was 12 years ago when I first started. At that time it did not matter what kind of ice it was, it could have been hard, soft, crushed, whole, it didn't matter I just wanted it. I developed the ice craving during each of my pregnancies (I have 5 kids) but went away when the pregnancies where over. Now that I am older (and not pregnant) I am starting to get that craving again but now I am particular to the type of ice that soothes my craving. I only eat a special type of crushed ice that is found at two different diners, Tijuana Flats and Sonic. No other ice will do. My husbands job is right around the corner from a Tijuana Flats and everyday I remind him to pic me up a cup. He gets annoyed and is constantly telling me to go get a check up, but heres the thing, the craving and the actual act of chewing the ice some how destresses my day and I dont want to be cured. I already know it is a sign of anemia and a quick fix is iron pills but I don't want to lose the relaxing feeling I get when I eat/chomp the ice.

I HAVE BEEN EATING ICE CONSTANTLY, NON-STOP, ALL DAY FOR 3 YEARS.  YES, I AM ANEMIC AND DIABETIC.  DOUBLE TROUBLE BECAUSE THEY BOTH GIVE YOU THE CRAVING OF ICE.  MY ADDICTION IS SO BAD THAT I HAVE TO CONSTANTLY HAVE A 64OZ CUP OF FINELY, SHAVED ICE.  I USE A SNOW CONE MACHINE TO GRIND MY ICE DOWN.  IT'S MUCH MORE BETTER FOR THE TEETH.  IF I FINISH ONE CUP AND GO WITHOUT FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME, MY MOUTH BECOMES VERY, VERY DRY, NO SALIVA AT ALL.  THEREFORE I KEEP CHEWING GUM WITH ME AT ALL TIMES BECAUSE IT HELPS TO KEEP MY MOUTH MOIST UNTIL I'M ABLE TO GET A CUP OF ICE.  EVERYWHERE I GO MY ICE GOES WITH ME.  IF I HAVE TO GO TO THE STORE, IT GOES IN THE STORE WITH ME.  TO THE DOCTORS, IT GETS A CHECK UP TOO.....LOL.  SHOOT! WHEN I GO TO BED IT GOES TO BED WITH ME.  FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, NOTHING GETS DONE UNTIL I HAVE MY ICE.  MY PROBLEM IS THAT I DON'T TAKE MY MEDICATIONS LIKE I SHOULD BECAUSE IF I DID I WOULDN'T HAVE THE CRAVINGS FOR THE ICE.

STILL CRUNCHING,

I love, crave and want ice all the time. I prefer ice nuggets from Thorton's Gas Station. I go every morning before work and every afternoon after work just to pick up a 64oz.cup of ice nuggets. I made an appointment to  get blood work done and found out that I am anemic. But i must also add that my period lasts for months at a time and an ultra sound showed that I have an enlarged uterus (if that sounds right). Nevertheless, I love ice. Although, I feel that too much can be harmful.

WOW!!!  I'm really surprise hw many of us r out there who r addicted to ICE.  From reading all ur comments,  it's like am telling u my story.  I started thanks to my mom,my mom started when I got sick with Lupus we were constantly in the hospital and u guys known hw they bring a pitcher of ice when she started loving it from there.  The addiction was so bad that she ate and ate ice all day cups and cups,at one poing our refrigetor stop working and wouldn't dispense ice.  So we would have to go bug bags of ice and it would last us 1 1/2 day (and am talking about the biggest bag).  i would tell her to stop, my father would get upset cuz she would crunch away, After awhile she started getting aches all over her body, and she cut back now she has max two cups a day.   The one who is addicted now is ME.  Before noon i can have about 6 cups of cube Ice,  when i have to go out i take the biggest cup i find at my house with filled with ice.  I don't finish my drinks i just want the Ice.   Threw out the day I think i have had about 10+ cups of ice.  Very Said!  The worst thing is that I'm a Hemo Dialysis patients and they limit my liquid intake can u imagine that.  I don't urinate, so i have lots of water rention.  I go to Dialysis Swollen from my face and feet and they take out about 4-5 kg every treatment,  My weight is 45.5kg and when i get there i weigh 50,51.3 kg so I'm about 4-6 kg over my dry weight and that just in one day and its all water because of Ice.  About being a IRON  it is.  Someone also comment that ice soothes ther nerves,  yes it does, When am depress, have aniexty or nervous, i notices i ate alot more ice.  WELL TO ALL MY ICE LOVES WE NEED TO STOP!  We r hurting ourselves someway its good and crunchy especially right now in this heat but its going to catch up to us sooner or later.  SO STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People with anemia are known to "crave" ice. Especially those with low iron in their blood. Not actually proven but many Anemic people have acknowledged this "habit" of always chewing on ice. My addiction to Sonic's amazing ice led me to this website
lol. Anemia seems to run in my family on the female side, including my grandmother and my mother, which concerns me a bit.

Hello crunch, i am so relieved to finally here someone else say that they like to sit in hot water with their ice. I eat ice constantly and what i love most is sitting in the tub with my ice and a book every nite and i would read until all the ice was eaten and then i'd bath and get out. recently lost had two miscarriages and i was wondering if it had anything to do with m anemia since the doc just found out that my blood cont is to low. I was given the lil black pills 325 mg a piece and i have a check up next month. If it doesn't get any better i will have to go to a hematologist to check my blood. Crunching ice is so nerve cooling and relaxing.I notice that i am a lot dizzier at times, loosing weight and my memory sucks at times. i'm always tired and no sleep seems lke enough sleep. I buy iced drinks now just for the ice or i will by bags of ice and eat most of it. hoping to get better but love eating my ice especially thee soft kind.

I am so glad to ready all the responses from everyone else who craves ice. I eat ice all day and night. When I wake up in the morning the first thing I crave is ice, so I'll go downstairs and get a handful of ice and chomp away. I then get to work and keep up to (2) bags of Fredmeyer Ice in the freezer and eat probably 3-4 glasses a day at work (luckily the girl I share an office with doesn't seem to mind). I then get home and will ususally eat a glass before dinner and then 1-2 after dinner before I go to bed. When we go out to eat, I will use my spoon to eat the ice out of my drink. I have been doing this really bad for the past 2 years, but the last year has been the worst. I thought maybe I was using the ice chomping as a stress reliever, but now after reading everyones posts I think I should go get some blood work done. Think I need a dentist as well, all this ice chomping is definitely affecting the teeth. It's nice to know i'm not alone!!

I have the same issue with eating ice , I buy those 16 lb bags from the machine in my town because it's very frosty and soft. I ended up in the ER last week due to my heart problem but the problem was that my hemoglobin level was a 7 . I was feeling tired and run down and my heart was acting up because of it. Now my dr is telling me that I may have kidney problems( not from eating ice) . If I don't get enough water now, my heartbeat goes awry because my kidneys are not absorbing and holding water . I'm taking iron supplements and my ice craving is nothing like it was! You may wanna get your iron checked and a complete physical and blood work up . I was told at the ER that constant ice eating will dilute your red blood cells. Any ways Good Luck to you!
