actually I hope this doesnt offend you but chewing ice DOES cause anemia the way ice freezes causes specific particals to enter your body by decentigrating the iron that it touches...chewing ice IS a sign, you are correct there ,that you may have anemia but if you do this regularly, you are the cause for your problem, i suggest if you have an addiction to ice crunching take iron suplements to prevent further causing of anemia.

If you are always thinking about ice, eating ice before food when you wake up or at meal times, and eating lots of ice during your day in either Summer or Winter, you definately have low blood iron and you also have depleted iron stores.  You need to go to the Doctor and get iron studies done on your blood.  This happened to me and once I had started taking iron tablets my desire for ice stopped after 2 weeks.  It is a sign that something is wrong and you need to check it out.  My iron was low over 3 years and because I don't have a specific doctor it was overlooked.  Take care of yourself and get it checked :)

I hae recently felt pain in my lower right side - but now it is quite painful in my left side. Did you find out if there is a correlation to eating ice. I thought it may be my kidneys as I eat it constantly. Wondered if the freon used to freeze ice in freezers may be doing something to my body I do not know if. Your post stood out to me when I read it. Pls let me know.

My ice craving started around 1997 when I was pregnant with my first child. It started with otter pops. I ate those things like they were going out of style. Now I'm 38 and crave ice and have for 16 years now. It has to be the frosty kind and when it snows out here I go grab a bag full and throw it in the freezer. I like my ice or snow lightly flavored with soda or juice. I'd stick it in the freezer overnight so it's gets all frosty. Feels so good .. the soft , sweet texture and the coldness of it. Well, I've been having digestive problems for a few years because of this. I eat more ice than food and have constant , very loose bowel mvtns. all of the time. I have to have ice after I eat too. It causes alot of gas and stomach cramps. So glad I found a place like this page to write about this. Thought I was the only one. I have a cup of soft ice right now in front of me. I like to eat my ice while I'm having a few drinks of whiskey too. The best! I'm fatigued and tired and have a constant period which doesn't help my anemia. I've always been on the thin , pale side all my life but now I look like a frozen zombie! Dizzy, muscle aches.. and I do NOT trust doctors. Can't take iron pills, they make me vomit. Oh well, guess there are worse addictions than munching on a cup of ice.

Hi, I was exactly like you for years! I would say mor than 10 years. I was always eating ice, buyin ice, eating ice after a drink, I had my favorite types of ice... I was craving it and had some much pleasure crunching it! ! month ago I went for some blood test and they discover I had anemia. My doctor gave me a treatment of Iron and just 2 weeks after I stopped eating ice! It's hard to believe as I loved it so much. I just dont crave ice anymore. I made some research and PICA (Pagophagia) is a sign of Anemia. I would recommend to go to your doctor. Good luck! Claudie

I have been anemic "all my life". I love eating ice. This 'addiction' started recently however and I am having a very hard time stopping. I will try the iron supplement and hopefully this would eliminate my ice eating cravings. I would still like to know if this has medical 'side effects.'

I thought I was crazy and alone in the world. Maybe I'm still nuts, but not alone. My favorite thing to do is go to Sonic Drive Thru and order a large cup of ice!

You most likely are amemic ...meaning you may have low iron or not getting enough iron in your diet. Consult your doctor

I had gastric bypass and yes I lost alot of weigh but I was only a size 12 when I had it... so that is where my trouble began. Two week after gastric bypass surgery I had a bowel obstruction. That was in 2003. I have since had 3 blood transfusion one as recent as the week of Feb 10th. I am extremely ice addicted to the point that I make my own ice. It has to be made with warm water so the ice cubes are not clear. My last hemoglobin count was less than 4 it should be 12. No one thinks eating ice is bad in my world of family and friends.  I have cancelled vacations, parties, holidays unless they are at my families or good friends because I can take my ice with me. I go out to eat and I order Ice in a glass and that is all. Restaurant ice is too clear. Ice eating is a VERY large symptom of anemia. Once I get a transfusion my ice craving stop for about 12 hours and then it is back. My ice craving was so bad in the hospital my family brought my ice from home because it took a while to find my blood type I am an AB neg. My family is getting concerned because I have now broken alot of my teeth. To have lost all the the weigh  above average looks I am still holed up in my home trying not to stray away from ice and too embarrassed to smile. Such a double edge sword for me. I just want to be done. I explain to alot of people that I feel like I am running parallel to a meth addict Thin,No teeth and always making an excuse to not attend something. Even dentists do not believe it involves ice and only ICE thanks so much for speaking up and letting me know I am not alone.

I love to eat ice! it has to be the type I make in the tray not the restaurant type.  After it is made I then take it out, put it in a cup and let it sit out for a while. That way it is soft and hard at the same time if that makes sense LOL

Hi ice lover's!!!!!

I have been eating ice since I was about 8 years old... I am now 35. It due to being anaemic ... It makes your body crave this ice and also causes you to be very weak and tired...  When I was much younger, my sister's and I would literally fight over ice. We would even scrape the ice that grows in the defreezer. I guess you could call us human defrosters
