How effective is stapes surgery?

Loading...

Stapes surgery is performed for conductive hearing loss due to otosclerosis and occasionally for mixed hearing loss.
The success rate of stapes surgery in experienced hands is quoted to be above 90%. The patient experiences improvement in hearing on the table. However the flip side is, over a period of time averaging about 11 - 12 years these patients tend to develop high frequency nerve deafness.
They can however manage in most circumstances without a hearing aid.
Bottomline: If you have otosclerosis with conductive hearing loss at an young age in both your ears, surgery would be the first preference.
