Hi, I am Ryan, I'm 14 (Turning 15 the 25th of June) and I am 6'0 205 pounds. I have been to a few BMI(Body Mass Index) websites that say I am obese, is their anyone that can confirm this? I would also like to know what is the best way to loose this fat, I am willing to go on a diet and I will be soon be going to the gym. I am not just looking to loose this weight I am looking to turn a lot of it into muscle for football. Thankyou for your time, and support, Ryan.

Hi Ryan,

I ran the numbers you gave and came up with "overweight" not obese. I'm not sure how much better that makes you feel.

One of the problems with the chart is that it is designed for fully grown men and women. At 14, even as tall as you are, I doubt that you are done growing. Your body is going to keep changing as you go through puberty. What you see as fat now will soon be replaced by muscle as you continue to grow.

Don't fixate on your weight. Find some activities that you enjoy doing and you'll lose the weight that way. Cut down on the snacks and soda and get away from the computer and TV. Once you start working out I think you'll see it burn off quickly at your age.

Good luck Ryan.

First of all, Thank you medic-dan, that does make me feel a little better. I also do realize that I am not done going through puberty, as I have mentioned I am almost 15 and all-ready 6'0 tall, my brother is 21 and is 6'6 so I will thin out EVENTUALLY. But I am going to go on a strict diet, and start not a vigorous work out plan but just go for a 2 mile walk everyday, and do some sit ups and push-up's then hopefully when I can start getting to the gym lift some weights. But I was wondering if their is any diets you could recommend.

Hi Ryan,

I'm glad that made you feel better.

At your age you really need to focus on a balanced diet. You definitely need protein to help build your body and muscles. You also need carbs to help fuel your body as you work out.

Really, just limit what you eat. Lay off the junk food and soda. Try to limit the amount of starches that you eat, breads, etc. Chicken (no skin) and fish are good, low in fat.

It's actually best if you talk to your doctor about this. They can help you design a well balanced plan that is right for you.

Good luck Ryan.
