It sounds to me like you guys are experiencing Burning Mouth/Tongue Syndrome. Make a Dr. appr. It is not cancer and it is not contaguose. Causes could be medication, menopause, stress, cranial nerve damage, alergies or diabetes. In any event get it checked. You will be alot more comfortable once you see the DR.

I have something similar to what people are talking about. Beneath my tongue/under my front bottom teeth it feels rough, kind of like sandpaper as people are saying. And I feel a pain on the bottom of my tongue. I have had these symptoms before and they have just gone away. I never thought it was an issue because I just figured it was tongue ring rubbing against my skin making it rough, and maybe it had gotten tugged and made the bottom hole sore. But this time I took my tongue ring out to make it feel better, and noticed small bumps on the bottom of my tongue. The best way I can describe them is like when one of your taste buds sticks out a bit, and you can kind of move it back and forth, and its a little painful when it's touched. Its just like that, only on the bottom of your tongue, where there are not normally any bumps like on top. I had braces put in a week ago, so I was thinking maybe something to do with that.. But I had braces years ago and don't remember having it then. Not sure if I ever had these symptoms before I got my tongue ring, but its hard for me to believe all these people wrote in and have tongue rings but no one mentioned it, so probably not that. If I feel inside my bottom lip with my tongue it's painful because my bottom teeth rub against the little bumps. Anyways. I did a bunch of research but no conditions I found sound anything like my symptoms, the only thing I found that was even close was this thread! Sucks not to know what it is, and that no one else seems to know, so I probably won't find the answer even at the doctor. But at the same time it is sooo nice to know I'm not alone on this one! And good to hear that for other ppl it has just gone away on its own, when I've had it before that was also always the case. Strange that no one knows what this is, obviously not a hugely uncommon problem. Unless somehow anyone who's ever had it has posted on this thread. Haha. Maybe its like cankers sores- kinda painful, but goes away on its own, and nothing to be concerned about, but no one knows what causes them.

I've had these little white bumps under my tongue, on the roof of my mouth towards the back and on the inside of my lower lip for about a year and a half. They do not hurt. They are uncomfortable as my mouth feels rough using my tongue. They just appeared one day. I have been going to many specialist in Vancouver over the past year and a half and have stumped them all so far. I've had WBC, RBC, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit,MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, Platelet count, Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils, Basophils, Cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL, Ratio T chol:HDL, LDL chol, Glucose fasting, ESR, Albumin, Alpha-1, Alpha-2, Beta, Gamma, Pattern, TSH, Glucose random,C Reactive protein, HIV serology and Rapid plasma regain blood tests. These tests were done over 3 visits and 3 months. All results were in the normal range. I've also had multiple swabs and scrapings of the little white bunps. Each time I'm told that whatever it is, it could not be grown but under the microscope, it appears to be yeast. I've been on Nystatin, Clotrimazole lozenges and Fluconazole to no avail.
Most recently I've had a biopsy done from under my tongue. The biopsy samples were sent for viewing under a uscope and for growing. As with the swabs and scrapings, they could not grow anything. I was shown the slides of the biopsy samples. The Dr. still thinks that the dots are yeast. It appears that during the cutting of the biopsy, some of the “yeast” was pushed into the lower tissue. Looking at the slides, he said that it does appear to be yeast but not a common strain. Normally the yeast has a couple of arms but the yeast I have has many and is similar to a bunch of grapes. My body does not see it as foreign and is not attacking it. The next step is for my Dr. to make an appointment with a microbiologist that specializes in yeast. My Dr. willl show the slides and hopefully they can identify the strain in order to determine the drug to eliminate it. If I can figure out a way to post some pics, I'll add another post.

I have the same exact symptoms, rough texture under my tongue and lower lip and also on the roof of my mouth towards the back. This is 4 days now and it just came on overnight. What is strange is me and two of my friends all got this same thing at the same time. It's not getting worse or better yet. There does not seem to be any pain at all. The texture is what grit or sand would feel like in your mouth but is embedded just under the skin. What is strange is how fast it appeared. My two friends (husband and wife) have the exact same symptoms. My wife does not show any of the symptoms. Each of the grainy "dots" are very very small and have a white head on them but is very difficult to see but easily felt with the tongue. Can anyone help with this? Is this a yeast?

My girlfriend and I both got these symptoms within a day of each other, similar to another post, raising the question: could this be a food allergy? Hers went away, but mine have persisted for about a week now. I should add that the grainy texture is barely present first thing in the morning; but as soon as I've had coffee (w/ half'n'half and honey) it flares right up. I also noticed one day that drinking fresh orange juice seemed to lessen the symptoms for an hour or so, though I haven't repeated that experiment. So curious. Can't wait to find out if there's a diagnosis out there.

I have experienced all of the symptoms described be everyone here. I have been chewing nicotine gum for about 2 weeks now, but began experiencing these symptoms a week later. I have been cheating frequently and smoking cigarettes as well, so nicotine overdosing has crossed my mind as a possible cause. The gum itself could be what is irritating my mouth though.

I just recently got snakebites (two lower lip piercings) and I started to use some non-alcoholic mouthwash religously to keep it from getting infected. I started noticing my lower gum and skin under my togue peeling off, it hurts too. I'm thinking it was from the mouthwash but i don't know. If anyone has any idea what it is I'd really appreciate it.

I've had the exact same thing on and off for over a month now. It's a rough feeling right inside the mouth on the upper and lower lip, under the tongue, and toward the back of the roof of the mouth. Sometimes it doesn't appear all these places, but it has been in all of them at some point. It usually comes for about a day and then goes away again. So far, I really can't tell if there are any triggers... I'm a really light smoker (just at parties and things) and i thought maybe that was it, but I've had days where I smoked and they didn't happen... food allergy is another possibility I guess, but I have no idea what it could be.

I definitely had them pretty bad one day and tried kind of scraping them with my nail and they do come off. Like little white, round blobs were stuck under my nails and my mouth felt less rough after that. It didn't hurt at all to do this. Later that day I brushed with a toothbrush on the areas and used mouthwash and it seemed to help them go away faster.

I haven't been to the doctor partly because they come and go so erratically that I could have no symptoms at all when I actually get in there. My own idea is that it's either an allergic thing or possibly a yeast type thing? Very weird...

I don't know if this is the same as what is being described here, but the bottom of my tounge seems to be drying out along with the bottom of my mouth (beneath the tounge and between the bottom teeth). My allergies have been acting up for the past week and this seems to have started about the same time so I'm thinking that the issues are related. Perhaps someone else can indicate whether they are noticing the same thing.

I have a similar roughness, and went to doctor and they saw nothing, so the only thing that it could possibly be is the useage of Mouthwashes, such as Listerine, with Peroxide, or tartar control mouthwashes. The reason being is that these mouthwashes are strong, and strong enough to knock tartar off our teeth, so in my opinion, I think they can effect our gums, and the senitive portions of our inner mouth under the tongue. So lay off the the heavy mouthwashes for a week or so and see if it clears up or gets a little better.

I have the same thing with the dry feeling skin on the floor of my mouth. I don't believe it is dangerous, just slightly annoying. i believe its causes could be acidic or drying elements like fruit (ie: pineapple ) or alcoholic properties (ie: beer, etc.). As far as treatments are concerned i'm not sure what a doctor would recommend other than a mouthwash of sorts because the problem is not bacterial or viral. It should go away on it's own.
