I have had scrotal sebaceous cysts since i was about 24. I also have fordyce's spots on the shaft of my penis and balls. I tend to sweat alot which i believe can be related to my condition.  I would say I sweat much more than normal person. I believe my cysts formed because my fordyce's spots get irritated and I started to itch them way to much because it felt really good. While doing this I noticed that cysts started to form because of rupturing the gland. The cysts form because of blocked glands which can happen on their own but can happen more frequently when irritated by rubbing or itching.

Here is an example of what Fordyce's spots are. I bet most of you have this too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fordyce's_spot

I also shaved my balls and it absolutely did not help the problem because the Fordyce's spots are usually around the hair follicle. I have gotten some cysts from ingrown hairs as well.

This problem has been so embarrassing for me and it took me 6 years to actually go to the urologist to get the cysts checked. I made an appointment - The doctored confirmed that they were cysts. ----Note--- tell the doctor that they bother you and that they are uncomfortable and that they keep growing. If you tell the doctor that it is a purely cosmetic issue the insurance company will not cover the removal procedure.---- The doctor then scheduled me for surgery which I went in for today. The procedure was not that bad other than the embarrassment i felt when the nurses asked me what I was in there for. Much better than feeling the "Are those herpes" question from the chicks you are seeing. The surgery took about 45 minutes. I had 5 cysts about the size of peas removed. The procedure was pretty painless and they give you good drugs to manage the pain after. I already feel much better about my decision to get them removed. I feel in control of my life again. There is not too much information on the web about this condition and I feel its important to tell my story. I will update on how it turns out as time goes on. I read through every post on this thread and here is what I can tell you.

1. Dont Rub or Itch your sack or penis.

2. Do not shave your balls because of risk of ingrown hairs

3. Do no use products such as lotions on your balls because you may clog the pore. Clog Pores lead to cysts.

4. Go see a urologist - Do not waste time with a mediocre dermatologist. Urologist are actually real doctors that go to real med school. There are many dermatologist and few urologist. Why do you think that is. Its easier to become a dermatologist.

5. Do not try and remove them yourself. Could you imagine getting an infection down there and losing your balls or worse everything.

6. Wash yourself throughly down there to make sure you clear your pores.

I know how embarrassing it is to deal with this problem and I know what it is like for a woman to make you feel bad about yourself because of this issue. Don't let it rule you. .. Be proactive .. Get them removed. If this post has helped you please let me know. Or if you have any questions feel free to reply. I will answer as I am still going through the recovery process

Thanks for sharing. This is really helpful, I've got one and I feel as you've described "embarrassed". I will schedule an appointment with urologist first thing in the morning. Thanks again!

thank u for your story... by far the best I've read, & I've read quite a few. This issue is with my recently new partner... he was totally embarrassed by this, but let him know he needs to not worry... my question is this... he believes that the surgery is pretty much useless cuz the cysts will forever grow back he said... is this true?

Next morning meand today I went to my family physician he gave local anaesthesia and cut some near by portion of my ruptured cyst annd pulled out that exposed cyst. It id quie painful process as I am under anaesthetic condition. My family physician put couple of stitches. And decided to operate rest of cyst one by one in near future.

Thanks for the post I have many if these cysts. How do I get my insurance to cover this. And, if I can get this covered and do this removal, are there any scaring or adverse effect?? I have already removed one by myself. I understand that I can get infections from this. But it is so embarrassing to tell anybody about this. Can you just give me some direction on how I can restore my confidence? Thanks again

I used to get them removed, there was no scarring that I noticed but the dermatologist was a woman who didn't acklowlege the irritation I was experiencing and didn't seem to care enough to help me through it. I kept touching down there and little ones grew back in droves. I suggest definitely dealing with it early and taking the advice of the original poster.

I've had these suckers since I was 13-14 years old. I'm 29 now. It all started with itchy balls (during the time hair pubic started growing. Hair grew down there in grade 7. It started getting bushier in grade 8 along with the itch) then with one cyst appeared in grade 9 which [i thought it was a pimple and tried popping it - but failed], in my early 20's, eventually multiplied and varied in sizes [I agree shaving ain't the way. I'd def. recommend people to trim using a trimmer, but don't shave with razor blades.] A urologist was my savior too! Dermatologists and family practitioners do absolutely nothing but say apply various topical cream or say things like "these are harmless, but if you'd like to have them removed it would be cosmetic surgery with each cyst costing up to $100." There are way too many stupid professionals in every field with Phd's too! We all must have a solid bull-sh*t detector. Sure the cysts may not be cancerous, but I couldn't take my relationships with various girls anything past good friends, and that finally drove me to be more assertive with my doctors; I was also willing to pay the $ if needed to have it removed. So at 27 I was directed to go see a urologist where we discussed about these suckers and scheduled a surgery at our local city hospital. I was given anesthetics and put to sleep. I had about 16-18 cysts by this time; it various sizes too. He marked them all with a sharpie while I watched him making we didn't miss any.All went well, and recovery was not bad. Now, it's been about 2 years since my surgery and no cysts have come back! My balls still itch, but that's another issue I think - maybe related to diet, immunity, or I may need to see a doctor who practices Chinese medicine? I will first go do an allergy test to make sure I don't have any food intolerance, etc.
I also remember my urologist saying that most of my cysts would have shown up by now and they shouldn't return. I am hopeful, however I need to be careful about controlling my itch down there. And making sure I solve that problem too, before any cysts creep in.
Psychologically this has def. held me back, and it feels so liberating to have smooth balls again. Sure there is some scarring, but I will tell my future sexual partners that they are battle scars from a BDSM chick I dated ;P My sex partners don't need to know the whole story. I am more worried about preventing getting STDs from the girls I will be romancing with. I'm the sparkling virgin here, so the scars are absolutely no concern of theirs.

ps. I guess I could even get small tattoos to hide the scars on my balls, matching my skin color. But scars are not a huge deal. Barely noticeable with the wrinkled up ball sack anyway. Not to mention hidden behind the penis! I would proudly go skinny dipping anytime. My balls will shrivel up more in the water... so no worries. Go get er removed ASAP and if they come back go have er removed again!
