Just back from the emergency room and, in looking to see if others experienced what's going on with me, I found this thread. Earlier today I sneezed quite vigorously and my throat began to hurt as others have described. Feels like a broken bone sticking into the middle of my throat. Swallowing "around" it is quite painful. They x-rayed my neck and told me I have sprained (strained) a muscle in my throat. Ibu (he was going to give me something stronger but I don't want that) and time will heal it. Don't know how I'm going to swallow solid food until it heals, but whatever...at least it's nothing more serious. BTW, he did mention that air pocket thing at first, but it didn't turn out to be that.

I had maybe the hardest sneeze in my life a few days ago without holding it in and all of the sudden I started to feel what you all described. I sharp pain on the right side near my adams apple when I swallow. It was getting better today until i was eating something sticky a caramel waffer cookie and as I was swallowing it I turned my head for a second and smiled at my GF and all of the sudden I hear this little ripping sound in my throat and it felt worse than the first time when it started hurting. Not a pleasant thing to experience. Its feeling a little better which happened 8 hours ago. I hope it gets better soon.

I have the same pain, it is very bad and really hurts to swallow.  I did not hold my sneeze.  I had a large sneeze and instantly my neck is in pain.  That was about 2 days ago.  It started to feel better and today I sneezed again and my neck is now worse.  What the heck?

Hi, Donovan here, in Edenvale. Well i love to sneeze, and load, so no issues there...However 6 days ago, somehow i held the sneeze semi in, purely by mishap...as i released and had my first swallow, it was instant pain like i was in the middle of mumps, swollen glands etc and i have semi lost my voice, it is soooo rough that it sounds like i have been laying sick in bed for days. A day later i was eating a really nice chocolate muffin, as it pasted the mouth and i tried to swallowand my pallete stuck to my lower mouth the suction resulted in a snap in my neck like a elastic band...hectic man...my mates laugh they say its cool, i now sound like Vin Diesel.....so whats the deal...what do we do??

So how long did it take to heal, and did it happen again since, Donovan

This happened to me and it hurt a lot at first.  It hurt enough that I didn't eat much because I didn't want to swallow any more than I had to.  It steadily got better and even on the second day wasn't horrible.  Sometimes it doesn't hurt at all, then maybe I sneeze (careful not to hold it in) and it hurts a little again.  It's about two weeks out now and there's still a little pain, but it's definitely going to be ok.

Maybe there are probably a lot of people who see this thread, but don't bother to post if it just heals on it's own.

Well, I am a doctor and I know other doctors and this seems to be an ill defined phenomena because aside from this thread noone really seems to know what the hell happened to us all.  I had the same thing happen to me, I've always stifled my sneezes, because I'm a doctor. I can't sneeze in my patient's faces-its just bad form and I had that thing where I turned my head while swallowing too and felt something crack in my neck. Horrfiying, and noone excepot the people that it has actually happened to seem to get it.  I went to med school and this is not in the general practice books.  I'm going to talk to ENT (ear nose and throat) doc soon and see if he knows, but I'm not holding my breath. I think the best explanation though is the deglutition process (swallowing) is thrown off when turning your head and chewing, but it is involuntary, so you can't stop it once you start, so it moves a bone in your neck (I suspect the hyoid--near the trachea or adam's apple) and voila, pain galore.  This should be a muscles strain in the neck that does clear up--cuz mine did when it happened several months ago.  Also as far as stifling sneezes, I imagine this also puts pressure on the vocal cords and hyoid that causes pain and maybe also strains the muscles in the throat.  I still have some issues even when I sneeze the "right way," but it does seem better (pain 1-2/10).  I'm just trying now to let it out now when I sneeze.  It's weird to me, cuz blowing mucous has always just seemed unseemly to me, but whatcha gonna do?

I sneezed in a chlorine pool and my nose dipped underwater and I haven't been the same since.  The water pressure against my nostrils was like holding backmy sneeze pressure.  It hurts my throat when I swallow.  It's like I sprained my throat or pulled some muscles or something...

This just happened to me. Has anyone come up with what exactly happened here and how long the pain will last?

Same thing happened to me last night as well. I do feel a bit better though it still hurts. Ive been trying to put a warm pad on my throat to relax the muscles. I've held in my sneezes my entire life, I just turned 30. Ive held them even more since I work at an office and do not want to disturb anyone. I will no longer hold in my sneezes so to bad for my neighbors.. Lol I have been eating soft foods like oatmeal, soup, etc. Dry foods like crackers, etc will only make it worse. I just hope it's nothing serious..
