I've had this problem for about 3 years now off and on. Sharp pain in my stomach that comes on suddenly and takes days to leave. Been to the ER a handful of times. Had CT scan, endoscopy, sigmoid, blood work, stool samples. On one occasion they found salmonella which had all the same symptoms and I was told that it wouldn't be reocurring. (so that's not the issue lol) Went to GI specialist who finally diagnosed me with having Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (without the vomiting) aka Abdominal Migraine. I don't know if I was just diagnosed with this cause there were no other explanations and tired of me coming in ( I have Kaiser) but I feel like there is something really wrong and no one will fix it or find it. Always, about a week before, I get the feeling of vertigo. Then out of no where I get a sharp stabbing pain (almost like severe gas) that has me doubled over and can barely breathe. I don't ever have diarhea or constipation (my bowl habits are the same every time). Usually, I end up in the ER if I can't shake it. Lately I've been just dealing with it and it's been happening everyday to every other day. This is very frustrating. I wish I had answers!!!

I have had this on and off for about 5 or 6 months... had the GI work up earlier in the year for other reasons with everything ok... today had worst pain on the left side... have had ovary checked twice and all appears to be normal. Have IBS and acid issues on occasion. Side muscles feel tight sometimes too... if it is nothing and just have to deal, that is fine... but would be nice to know... going to get it checked out some more...

I have the pains that some of you are describing. The pain is just to the left of my belly button, in about a 2" area. I think it is nerve pain. Feels just like my kower left side did, just before, during and after I had an outbreak of shingles. I have had this pain on and off for several months ( 3 years after my shingles outbreak.) It usually bothers me if I am wearing something tight around my abdomen, and then bend over.
Yesterday, I was in a car accident (hit for behind) and that same area is hurting'stinging again. I think the seatbelt irritated it, The pain is worse if I poke at it, so I am trying to keep my hands off. Anyway, for those that have no other symptoms but the sharp pain, you may want to ask your doctor if it could be nerve pain. :-)

I have had this pain all my life.
Can you all do me a favor and try cutting out Milk from your diets. I mean all Milk products. Cream etc.
I have a suspicious that Milk has something to do with this pain.
Then post back after 2 or 3 weeks and well check the results.

I've had the same pain for about 2 years. Just left of the belly button. Usually at night, but not always. Comes out of nowhere, lasts a few hours and goes. Doesn't change with diet. It's really annoying.

I have pain next to my belly button on the left side.
Since October 2008 I have been experiencing symptoms of PCOS,
POLY CYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME. I have yet to be seen by a doctor, but
am most certain this has a great deal to having my left fallopian tube
tied for 13 years.
I am also epileptic and take PHENYTOIN, which i have been told
by doctor elevates and decreases insulin levels. So if you have
abnormal or imbalance insulin levels this alone will cause all kind of
female troubles.

I find that my diet helps. Try cutting out all veggies and just eat rice and chicken for a bit. Then reintroduce easy veggies like carrots (no cabbage or onions).
It seems to help alleviate some of the symptoms.
My doctor is also testing for parasites. Apparently lots of people can have parasites in our rich country and not know it.

I had sharp pain in the same spot, couple inches left of the belly button. It feels cramped or something and hurts when I cough, sneeze, move around too fast, or breathe deeply. Lasted about 2 days, was gone for several days, and just started again yesterday, not sure what the problem is. I'm 19yo male. I don't feel sick aside from that though. It's not unbearable but it's *very* uncomfortable.

Alright, I'm the 19yo in the last post, it's actually more above and to the left rather than straight to the left of the belly button, around the abdominal area, after some more feeling and laughing (ouch!) and reading more online I'm convinced I have a cracked/bruised/fractured (whatever you want to call it) rib. So it's probably not the same problem as you guys, hopefully I'll get feeling better on my own within the next few weeks, the pain is not unbearable just very uncomfortable and I have to be careful with my sneezing / coughing / laughing / moving around. %-)

Today for the first time I'm getting pains about 2" to the left of my belly button. I was so surprised to find so many people experiencing this and no medical explanations after so many tests.
I'll share some factors about me in hopes of finding others who may share some of these so that we can determine possible common factors!:
39 year old female
I am on the Pill and have not been sexually active so I know I'm not pregnant.
I have PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome) and have been on Metformin diabetes medication for 2 years to treat it.
I have an underactive thyroid and have been taking Armour Thyroid for 2.5 years.
I recently started a diet and have lost about 5-7 pounds in the past month. For many months before this, I have been eating a balanced diet which includes fruits, vegetables, proteins and carbohydrates.
I had my gallbladder removed 10 months ago.
I have regular bowel movements.
If someone can find a common link to any of these factors maybe we can narrow down a cause!

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. That is awful. A few years back I was diagnosed with a parasite called Dientamoeba Fragilis. I had never done any traveling. Not sure where I got it but could have been as simple as a food worker not washing there hands. My regular Dr. found it from a stool sample but there is a lab called Great Smoky Mountain Lab that specializes in finding parasites. It might be worth it to look into it. (I think they have changed thier name to Genova Diagnostics or something like that but if you Google Great Smoky Mountain Lab it will come up) I wish you the very best and will keep your daughter in our families prayers.

I have a pain in my left side as well. It started out as just a bothersome pain that was only really noticable when I wasn't doing anything (just laying down or sitting still). I just figured it would go away since everyone usually has random pains now and then. But over the past few days it has gottnen significantly worse. Now it's a chronic pain but feels as if I just got punched in the gut really hard and have some what of a gut renching feeling. If you've ever lifted weights and felt really sore the next day that's about what it feels like, only it feels as if I'm constantly flexing. I'm going to the doctor tomorrow so hopefully we will figure it out.
