My mother-in-law has been having the exact same problems for several months now and when I first read these posts, I was concerned that she may never get an answer. Luckily, she saw an ear, nose and throat dr. today and he said it looks like it might be"glassopharyngel neuralgia". She had to have a few x-rays done, and until he reviews those, he will not know for sure if that is what she has. I researched this disorder online and the symptoms sound exactly like what she has been going through, so hopefully she will be able to start treatment soon. Hope this helps some of you...

Hello, I'm also in my upper 40's and have sharp pains in the left/back side of my tongue that wakes me up at night. I have less sensation on the left side and sometimes numbness on the left side of my lips. I had lost some hearing on my left ear. I also had developed tinnitus in the form of constant high pitch ringing, chime sounds and static noise.
My ENT doctor sent me to get an MRI which shows an acoustic neuroma in the left side of my head. The benign tumor is on cranial nerves #7 and 8; two nerves affect various facial muscles and equlibrium. Usually this type of tumor goes unnoticed because it stops growing or grows very slowly. I had vertigo so had another MRI that showed the tumor did grow.
Options were: wait months for 3rd MRI, get radio-surgery or surgery (done behind the left ear). This rare type of tumor is found on one side. If a tumor on each side occurs, check for a genetic disease called Neurofibromatosis II. I have opted for radio-surgery in Houston, Texas. I will ask the neurosurgeon whether the pain on the tongue results from the acoustic neuroma

Its one of those web pages that you soon realise is a complete waste of time. However, it would be better if other people who had the same symptoms DO NOT add further comments unless its a solution or adds value to the original message.

I have read your comments, it's nice to know I am not alone. It feels like I have bitten my tongue but in reality I have not. It's a mystery to me what this condition is. Is it fatal lol, it happens usually when in bed and the pain lasts for a few seconds. My tongue looks normal and it has nothing to do with my teeth.

Sharp tongue pain during my sleep on either side of my tongue has happened to me for years. I've told two doctors and two dentists and they all said they had never heard of anything like this. This started about eight years ago, then it didn't happen for years and now it's happening a lot. I would love to find a cure...

I am a 50 year old male having the same problem -- A shooting pain is felt in the middle or on the sides of my tongue but only when falling asleep or after I have been sleeping. It does not happen when I am fully awake. I share in common with some others here, a back problem -- Spondylolisthesis stemming from a congenital neural lumbar arch defect which has produced slight slippage forward of the 5th lumbar at the S-1 level. But I have not experienced any unusual back pain lately. What coincides with the pain in my tongue has been the initiation of a new psychotropic / antidepressant drug, Wellbutrin (Bupropion). On a different health forum website, I found another individual experiencing the sharp tongue pain who was taking Wellbutrin. But they discovered this pain to occur not just with Wellbutrin but with a variety of other antidepressants they had tried. I've taken other antidepressants as well (ex. Paxil, Prozak) and had tongue issues (e.g. flat metalic taste, dry mouth, loss of appetite) but the sharp pain did not start happening until after I'd been taking Wellbutrin for a few weeks.
As for the theory that stress could play a factor, I have not been under any unusual stress or anxiety, however I have not been sleeping but a few hours each night such that I am fatigued and in need of rest.
My doctor has been consulted and he is stumped on what this tongue pain could be coming from, but he recommends suspending the Wellbutrin to see if the shooting pain stops occurring. If any of the others answering to this thread are experiencing the tongue pain and are taking antidepressants, consider that drug to perhaps be the source and talk with your doctor about suspending your drug treatment or trying a different antidepressant.

Started a few months ago. I'm 44yr male approx 40lbs overweight. Extremely sharp needle like intense pain in one spot on my tongue. Happens in different spots on my tongue once or twice a month for 2-5 seconds, always as I'm falling or lightly sleeping. I'm speculating It's due to a combination of dehydration, eating meat/salty, and stress. Praying it's not desease or worse.

I'm a 65 yr. old female and have had the electro-shock tongue pain for about 5 or 6 years. I blame Sertraline/Zoloft, but it could also be a side effect of my Type II Diabetes. The electro-shock zaps usually startle me as I am falling asleep, but sometimes when I am waking up, and once in a great while the zaps will happen out of the blue!
I am totally intriqued by the facts that :
1. this symptom occurs usually around the time I am just dropping off to sleep.
2. the zaps happen on either side of my tongue simultaneously most of the time.
3. the zaps are completely unexpected and excruciatingly sharp enough to make me jump or jerk my whole body,
and
4. NO ONE seems to know what the hell is causing these events!
Not my dentist, my GP, or my psychiatrist have any ideas and usually look at me strangely when I talk about it.
You would think that with the number of us reporting these unusual nerve pains, that someone would study, or look into the issue! But here I am, in the 4th year of tongue zaps. Sometimes they go on for weeks at a time; other times only once in awhile.... but I am still having them. I used to be frightened of them, but now I just find them weird and annoying.
I wish there was more information out there on this crazy damned symptom!

I have a similar problem; very sharp pain in tongue during night as if a needle has been pierced in. Tried many doctors but to no avail.
Finally I gave homeopathy a try; and it did work like a miracle. the medicine prescribed to me is just one drop of "Lachesis-1M" for just one time. (Morning before eating anything) ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed
The pain has vanished and hasn't recurred in a month. Please be advised that homepathic medicine is very specific to patient; do please ask your homeopathy doctor before trying. But, giving one drop of Lachesis a try won't hurt. Hope it helps some of you.
Thanks,
Abby

I am 23 years old and recently had my wisdom teeth removed. It's been a week since the surgery I began feeling the above mentioned symptoms this morning. It feels as if I bit my tongue, usually when I swallow. The big difference is it's happening as we speak, not at night but most of this morning. (have now been awake for 4 hours) I have not been under any unusual stress lately but I believe it may be related to the surgery. I will try all of the mentioned "cures" and report back as soon as I have made any progress. *Fingers crossed*

I'm a 27 year-old male, and I too just started having this problem. It happened once as I was waking up this morning, and again while I was napping in the afternoon. The pain feels like a needle stabbing the back of my tongue, and lasts about five seconds. When I feel the back of my tongue with my finger, there are some bumps there, but they are not sensitive to the touch. I hope we all can find a solution to this.

I'm a 39 year old male having the exact same issue. I've noticed though on the left underside of my tongue what appears to be almost like a puncture hole where the pain is coming from. I also have a sore on the front left tip of my tongue that is extremely irritating. Both hurt to the touch but otherwise if left alone are fine. I am a bit overweight and a heavy snorer but also found that when I lay on that side it's when the pain occurs and not to be gross drool from that side. If I lay on my opposite side none of this occurs. I was diagnosed recently with acid reflux and had 2 bleeding ulcers but don't know if they play any role in this. I would love to know a reason or some sort of way to sooth this irritation. Doctor seemed to be puzzled by it and chalked it up to stress and my high blood pressure. He said once I start losing weight lets see if it is still an issue. Easy for him to say, it's not his mouth.

I'm 28, and i've been having this same issue for the past 4 years. It started after i got some medication that makes my mouth completely dry at night (plus other side-effects, but some of you mentioned "dry mouth" up there). But like you guys/girls, the dentist and doctor just looks at me weirdly, prolly thinking i'm lying or something. It doesn't happen every night, but at least twice a week (sometimes more).
