I am 20 years old and have had sharp pains in my tongue for three years now. Usually, the pain lasted for only a minute or two and then went away, but just two weeks ago the pain lasted all day. It started in the morning and didn't go away until late at night. I couldn't swallow it hurt so much and I couldn't eat, drink, and could barely talk to describe my symptoms. Went to the doctor and he was stumped. I have fibromyalgia, so the pain may be related to that, but I doubt it because these pain "spasms" began before I had Fibro. I hope this adds new info. Please, can someone help?

This happened to me 2 times that I can remember. Once was last night. It was when i was in a semi unconscious state and the pain woke me up. I definitely didn't bite it but it is still a little sore today and there might be a little bump that I cant see. I am 20 years old and pretty healthy, though I was tossing and turning all night before this had happened (stress/anxiety maybe; which would attribute to that explanation). Though the first thing I thought when it happened was spider bite. From what I have heard people swallow many bugs and spiders throughout their lifetime while sleeping; maybe a mini spider-like bug can go in their and nibble at your tongue. I dont actually know anything about the types of bugs that are small and go in your mouth while your sleep, but that is a possible explanation.

I've had the same problem twice recently. I am a 25 year old male...
this has never happened to me before. Its crazy when it happens I feel
like it makes my heart beat weird after the initial shock.. The only
thing I'm doing different is using Nioxin shampoo and hair treatment to
stop my thinning hair.. Is anyone else using this product or a similar
one?

Hi - I hope this helps some of you. I started getting SHARP pains in my tongue last October. They happen while sleeping and wake me up with a yelp or cry each time they happen. They're always in the middle of the right SIDE of my tongue. Each time these pains start up again I go to my doctor, get diagnosed with a yeast infection in my mouth and the pains go away after a few days of anti-fungal meds. They tried the liquid swish and hold in mouth meds first but those didn't work. Probably because I tend to get these infections from my mouth to my colon.
I know it's a very odd thing to explain to a doctor and not sound looney. If you go to the doctor - see if you have a yeast/thrush infection in your mouth.

I am not a doctor but have a theory.
I have this condition too, just as im about to fall asleep a pain in the tongue. Mine is a severge burning or pinching.
I believe these to be cramps or contractions in the tongue. The tongue is a large strong musecle. Somehow the sleep fires off a few false signals and wham, the cramp constricts a small portion of the tongue.
Lack of water and stress contribute.
That's the best i have.

Same thing happens to me. Only when I am dozing off. I am 61 and it only started happening in the last few weeks. At first I thought I bit the tip of my tongue but I wasn't sure since I had been dozing off at the time. Very shapr pain at the tip or just under the tip of the tongue not sure because as I said, it happened while I was in a light sleep and it only last a few seconds. Really weird.

I am also looking for answers as the identical symptons started with me a few weeks ago. So far it has happened 3 times always when dozing off before going into a deep sleep. It is a very sharp pain at the center tip of the tongue or just under the tip. Hard to tell since I am dozing at the time and it only last a few seconds. At first I thought I had bit the tip of my tongue as I have experienced before but not the very tip. Now after 3 events I know that is not the case. The only changes I have experienced that could be the cause my having to deal with much more stress than has been the norm for me. Hopefully someone will find out what may be the cause of this condition

I have had the same issue with the pain at the base of my tongue on the right side for 4 years. Sometimes, I go for months without a symptom. I know it's not a dental issue. I'm 60, white male.

Doesn't look like anyone is getting any answers. I am a 45 year old female and have been having the same problem - sharp pains in my tongue only when or dozing off. Happens if I nap on the couch or falling asleep in bed, day or night, never ever while awake. Sometimes I think I've bitten my tongue, but other times I'm quite sure I haven't and the pain just feels like I did. Really weird - would like a clue. It's nice to know I'm not alone though!

I'm 19, and this just started happening, so I don't think this is an age thing. My experience is pretty much just like everyone else's; ie, taking a nap, and just about to fall asleep when I have an intense, shooting pain in my tongue. It's finals week, and I have only been getting a couple of hours of sleep a night, so I think it's stress related. I think the culprit could be HSV-1.
The little bumps people are getting on their tongue are most likely chancre sores. HSV-1 is what causes chancre sores, which people are much more susceptible to when they have a weakened immune system, brought on by heightened levels of stress, lack of sleep, illness, etc. The shooting pain is also fairly common with chancre sores. I don't really know why the pain would only occur in the semi conscious state right before falling asleep (and also only during naps.) It might have something to do with a lack of blood flow/ dry mouth coupled with a developing chancre sore. That's my best guess.

My reply to a previous post was edited which unfortunately, removed the information provided by the web link. This is copied from the site maintained by the Skull Base Institute. For more info, web search 'glossopharyngeal nerve'.
Glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GN) is a disease characterized by severe paroxysmal attacks of sharp, lancinating pain effecting the sensory distribution of the glossopharyngeal nerve, including the base of the tongue, soft palate, tonsils, pharyngeal pillars, posterior pharyngeal wall, and the inner ear.

I was 50 something when this nonsense started. I hadn't had any recent dental work done. I suspected right away that it was nerve related, but to this day do not understand why the pain is primarily visited upon me just as I am dropping into sleep.
However, I must add that I am definitely a type II diabetic and feel that this stuff is part and parcel of my neuropathy problems that I am developing. Why it should be my glossopharyngeal nerve in particular that is acting up (besides the neuropathy in my feet,) I do not know. And evidently there is no cure for the condition whatsoever. I think I am done paying any more attention to it. I shall just live with it along with the other aches pains and unexplicable weirdnesses that I experience on a daily basis. Feh.

I just had pain in my tongue while I was falling asleep and I too am using Nioxon shampoo.
Weird though, I've been using the shampoo for several months and nothing like this has happened before.
Possible causes for me: stress and not drinking enough water.

I'm 22, Male. I'm a bit underweight, but otherwise in good health and spirits.
I have been under considerable stress in the past week but I don't attribute this too that. It's too constant, sharp, and specifically located for that in my opinion.
I'd love to know if anyone has found any helpful home remedies until we find a cause for this thing. I really would like to eat and enjoy a whole meal again! I'm traveling right now in India from the states, and will visit a doctor here to see if they have any unique insight.

Wow. This is a simple problem that can easily be solved by more comsumption of vitamin D and C. I am a doctor that specializes in the mouth and nasal cavities. Just consume more vitamin D and C foods and you'll be fine.

Finally! Thank you Doctor Jung.
I have not been to see my on doctor in months. He did have my on 50,000 ieu's(sic) a week of Vitamin D. Blood tests showed my level to be extremely low. Now that you have brought that to my attention it was sometime after I stop taking the Vitamin D that I started experiencing the pain. I know what I have to do and thanks again.
