Umm, i don't think i'm gonna put a knife under my pillow, not too smart.  Regarding comments about hygiene/diet.....that has nothing to do with it.......i brush and i don't eat late at night.  However, this mystery condition stopped after my first post about 5 or 6 months ago, how ironic.  It started in 2010, stopped in 2012, and no explanation for it.  Go figure.

I'm Happy to hear that people have the same symptoms but kind of concerned of the age range which people 30 and over is having this sharp pain in the back of their tongue. It started this week when I was sleeping but then woke up early which is not really me to have a 2 or 3 hour nap. This sharp pain which really hurts a lot and I mean literally a lot. It would keep throbbing whenever I move my tongue, cough, or would swallow but it would happen for hours then fade away when I sometimes eat during the day but whenever its around midnight or later. It would come back and start hurting. It's only been maybe 4 days and now my left side of the ear is sore and it hurts as well. I took aspirin or Advil and they wont work so seeing the doctor would be the best help which ill be seeing today. What I'm really worried about is I'm 19 and afraid of this happening at a young age to me. So if anyone around my age or knows its ok to happen at this age. Please reply to me about my question or if you want to know what results I get. I'll be glad to tell you. Thank You in advance!!! :)

I can tell you that from my experience that it also happened quite often at the tip of my tongue, as well as in the back of my tongue. The pain was similar to biting my tongue, but it never caused any other effects like feeling pain by my ear. The pain would go away after a couple of days (again, similar to biting your tongue or biting the inside of your mouth, the pain usually lasts only one or two days). It started when I was in my mid-40's but the good news is that it stopped after about two years. I have no idea what caused it to start or stop (it stopped about 6 months ago and I hope it never happens again). Nothing in my routine or diet or anything else has changed. It was just weird. Good luck.

IN RESPONSE TO ROB 1965.....Good morning, the reason i found this site is the very reason for my symptoms..I am a woman smoker & 40...up until the last 2months on occasion i wake up with the sharp pain under my toungue and is accompanied by waking up with my right arm and hands with iscemia (cutting off your blood from an area of your body) i figure i sleep wrong so i awoke last two consecutive mornings with 3 or 4 hours sleep. My spouse says its sleep apnea or signs of a stroke Im trying to quit smoking and its making me an insomniac im seeing a doctor this week.

Good luck with that. Does not sound anything like the symptoms I had.

Bryan, I too had my wisdom teeth removed recently. I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed over two weeks ago and the sharp pain in my tongue did not start until 10 days after my surgery. I still am experiencing the pain but mine is only when during the day when I am trying to eat, drink, swallow, or talk. I saw a doctor the other day and she believes it was an infection in one of the lymph nodes in my neck or something related to the ear but maybe it was a damaged nerve during the surgery. I am going to try some of the suggestions that were offered here.

*Drinking plenty of water
*Getting Vitamin D
*Getting Vitamin C
*Getting plenty of sleep
*Lower my stress
*Eat a more balanced diet (which was hard for the a bit because of the surgery but now I can eat solid foods)

The weather has been crazy up here so there was not much sunshine (lack of Vitamin D)

Are you still experiencing the pain in your tongue when you swallow? Did you find out what caused the pain? Let me know because I would really like to find out if this was related to the wisdom teeth surgery or if it is something else. I should point out that I am 28.

I'm a 30 year old female and I too have had this unexplainable sharp tongue pain that happens ONLY when I am asleep at night or in that in between sleep state in the mornings. I can remember it happening from like 5 years ago or maybe more. I really thought I was the only one experiencing this because my now ex husband said im crazy and that I probably bit my tongue which I knew I did not. I looked this condition up because not an hour ago I woke up because of this pain. It doesn't happen all to often, maybe once or twice a month and it happens on both sides of my tongue, not at the same time but I've noticed both sides. I have a doctor appt today actually and I am going to do my best to explain this without coming off as sounding insane. I have a lot of similar health problems as a lot of you have posted with the back problems, smoking, over weight, stress, dehydration and even yeast infections. I don't know if it's related to this sharp tongue pain but there has to be a connection somewhere!! I'll see what I can find out and I will post any info I'm given. This is so bizarre..

I am 44 and experience this too. When I started my new job I never expereinced the kind of stress I have my whole life. The shooting pain is infrequent and random, but I think it also has something to do with the way one sleeps, too. Every time this happens it seems I clamp down on my tounge with my teeth so it cuts off some blood flow to the tounge. I primarily sleep on my side. It is startiling pain and does wake you up.
