Wow!! I too have had these severe sharp pains on my tongue for a few yrs now! It is weird because it ONLY happens when I am dozing off like for a nap, not at night. It is so sharp, it jolts me awake! Hurts for a few seconds & then goes away. My dentist could find nothing wrong & had no answers. It is most usually on one side of my tongue...the right side or once in a while kind of in the middle. Am so gald to hear I a not the only one with this problem. (sorry...that didn't sound so nice) ;)

I'm a sixteen year old boy and evwry one on here seems to be 30+ I thought it was just me because I asked my friends and none of them knew what I was talking about. It usually happens every couple of hours unlike the people here who it only happens during the night...

I'm 38 this year and I've had this on both sides of my tongue for about 4 years now. Though it always seems to happen either just before I fall asleep or just before I fully wake up. I also have a history of biting my tongue in my sleep and sometimes wake up with blood on my pillow, this seems to have nothing to do with it. ET phone home? It's freaking me out!

Hello all, I'm 23 yrs old and I had the same happening to me as well for the past 2 yrs to realise at the end that I had blocked glands, where the glands can't produce salvia due the blocking and that's where the sharp pain starts, knows as well as the "meal syndrome" it's easily treated with lemon. You can try to search under salivary gland duct stone, hope I could help. Good luck.

I had a sharp pain in my tongue last night. It felt like lightening. Today my tongue is still hurting especially on the tip of it. Wish I knew what caused it. Never happen before. and hopefully never again.

I experience exactly the same thing. The pain for me happens on the left hand side of my tongue underneath. I get a sharp pain near towards my throat when I swallow and then the whole left side of my tongue feels like it's burning up or on fire or something. Once again this only ever happens in the morning and seems to get better once I sit up and only lasts for ten fifteen seconds. There are no other side effects with it so I'm not too worried but it does hurt and It really is so strange !

I have had ongoing recurring pain like this in my tongue. Happens randomly and I asked many doctors about it over the years. They would all look at me like I was crazy. Then a few years ago I mentioned it to an ENT I was seeing for something unrelated. He diagnosed me with Tic Doularou. Some of you sound like it could be that.

I have the same sharp *piercing pain under the right side of my tongue from time to time while asleep. Wakes me up it hurts terribly bad and last only about 10 seconds or so. I usually fall back asleep but i woke up and stayed up this morning with it. Worries me that I see no conclusive answers.

Exact same as you! But I have no disc issues, although I have thrown my back out.
I'm 37 and I get the pain upon waking up and falling asleep....usually falling asleep, today it happened waking up.
It's the right side of tounge and lasts 2-8 seconds...feels like someone pinching my tounge with a pair of pliers.
Perhaps it's a kind of cramp within the tounge and neck? If the duration of pain starts lasting longer, and if the frequency of this episode (for me its been spuratic, last week..then two days in a row, not in last 10 days..etc.)increases, I would consult a physician... That's what I will do..I have a feeling it's just a cramp?? I get cramps in my diaphram...now that's painful, the tounge thing I can live with as long as it doesn't start incteasing
