I need suggestions or ideas.

Lately when I have been going over 15 or 16 miles and I have been carrying gel packs in those little pockets that some shorts have on the back I have been getting 3 nice rashes/irritations?? right near my butt.

Any ideas on what I can do to keep this from happening in 2 weeks when I go for my 22 mile run??

Get a Fuel Belt. This will not only hold your water but you can put your gels into one of the flasks or if you would rather pin it on your belt.

Thanks RB,
I am thinking about one of those for my 50K, if I can save enough money.

Not sure if the two are connected. Have you tried a belt for the gel packs instead of placing them in your pockets? Your irritation could also be stemming from chaffing which are bound to occur, because your shorts would be tighter with the gel packs. May be try running without gel packs for some time and you would know.

I fold mine over by placing the tear end at the bottom of the pocked and folding it so the top isn't over the shorts (and it's not so pointy that way), or lay them sideways in those great pockets. I too learned the hard way.

I use the fuelbelt as well, but I sometimes get a rash in front where the belt chafes. I have been putting some Bodyglide where the chafing was occuring and that seems to have stopped it.

Maybe you could try the same thing on your back where the gels chaf?

I've seen in marathons often people will safety pin them to their shirts. But since you go shirtless so much that might not work. You could always stick some velcro on the packet and cling it right to your chest hair :o

Try a racing belt. Not only can you clip your bib # on, but you can safety pin your gels to that. Some have pockets for keys, etc. as well.

:duh:
I've safety pinned them to my shorts too...as long as you have the two layer shorts and you pin them to the outside layer only, I think this could work.
