I have been wrestling with the same issue of smelling the like of car exhaust Dunedin and off for about a year or so now. I kept thinking that it was everywhere in the air and stayed kin my nose at night. I finally figured out recently, that it is probably due to being allergic to sugar. It has taken me a couple of months of going to the allergist and finding out that I have become allergic to many things including foods and clothing and certain chemicals that they make all of our wearable and washable products out of, that he decided to test for auto immune and it turns out I likely have a form of lupus. He didn't test for sugar but as I was being careful and watching and limiting what I consume, I my self became aware that the effect went away when I cut out sugar. I tried the vitamin b's and everything people were saying on this site that didn't work until I discovered the sugar connection. Not necessarily the natural sugars but mainly the high sugar stuff like sweets and drinks. I am convinced after talking with others and finding out the different forms of auto immune that are cropping up mainly in women are due to the high and increasingly higher chemical and pesticide content in our lives such as in our clothing; Rayon, viscose, and modal are made with formaldehyde and most people don't know. Also can be in our towels and the bamboo pillows, which are not bamboo, and carpets. It's also in our bedding now in which we sleep. Also tested positive for a common chemical they use in our soap products and fragrances. I am highly allergic to soy now and they make that with a bunch of chemicals they won't even give animals, but if they did we would get it that way too. My son in law works in a soy plant and verified this. Europe has banned most of these toxic chemicals. Could it be because they are on a National health care system and it would bankrupt their system? Yet by our getting sick with these products, we are supporting our health care in America?. I used to not be such a voice until I have experienced this for myself. I hope to create more awareness and help people to become well from this.

The worst part, 1st time I stopped was 2010 and didn't smoke again til 2016. 5 years i couldn't get away from the exhaust smell.
2nd time i stopped August 2017, its jan. 2018 and the exhaust smell is still here.
Problem is, I don't think it ever stopped while i was smoking. But I do know it started in 2011. I chalked it up to havin stopped smoking your taste and smell get more sensitive. So I thought it was something I just couldn't smell b4.
But it only happens at night / evening when I am laying in bed watching tv.

The exhaust smell came upon me back in 2011.
Never have I taken notice that it was only around when I had a sinus infection. But I do have one now. which prompted me to come here, finding this thread while searching the internet.

I have been battling with this and it comes and goes almost daily now. I have been working extremely hard on my diet because I have been diagnosed with some kind of autoimmune although they are not sure yet, Lupus, Hashimoto Thyroid, who knows. As it sit here and write and am sitting on my couch, I can smell it and it has gotten a lot better since I've been reducing my sugar intake and dairy and anything with carbohydrates. I also have low Vitamin D, underactive thyroid, high cholesteral and borderline type II diabetes. No one understands this smell unless it's related to a tumor or oncoming seizure which they said would have manifested itself by now if it was going to happen. I have been doing sooo much research and have discovered the leaky gut syndrome, which can precipitate all of this and a lot of other autoimmune diseases if not taken care. So I have been diligently changing my diet to try to cure this which I think is possible, since it has lessened so much and for the most part (except what it seems for a while after I eat, I think I'm beating it. I am following a leaky gut diet (small intestinal permeation). ...staying away from the major triggers, (sugar, Dairy, carbohydrates, now even coffee until after I eat. Anything that's hard on the gut or inflammatory to the system. I hope it repairs itself soon. It is very difficult for me to deprive myself of simple breads, cheese, sweets, etc. but thank God for places like Whole Foods with alternatives for things I love. It has been a lot of work, but it's working. I'm also going to the health food store and getting that L glutamine here on Monday that's supposed to help. You should google Leaky Gut and there is so much information on the web even though the medical industry doesn't recognize it has a thing. I believe that it is and hopefully will be healed within a month. Then, supposedly you can return to eating some stuff within limits. I hope without the reactions that I have. Good luck, but check it out and see if you have some of the symptoms described.
