I had covid about 6 months ago and my smell has not worked since. About three weeks ago I was hit with the car exhaust fume smell in my nostrils EVERY BREATH is filled with the smell of exhaust fumes. I hate car exhaust so it's like I can't escape something I hate and it's making me really upset!

Hi, guest.

It sounds like you're experiencing a condition known as parosmia, which is a distortion of the sense of smell where familiar odors are perceived differently and often unpleasantly.

Parosmia is a known complication of COVID-19, and it can occur even in people who had mild or asymptomatic cases of the disease. It usually develops as the olfactory nerves responsible for detecting smells start to recover after the infection, and it can last for several months.

Unfortunately, there's no specific treatment for parosmia, but the good news is that the condition often resolves on its own over time as the olfactory nerves continue to heal.

In the meantime, there are some things you can do to alleviate your symptoms, such as avoiding strong smells and taking steps to improve indoor air quality. You can also try retraining your sense of smell by exposing yourself to pleasant scents and flavors.

Let us know if anything of this helps. Good luck.

I have had this issue as well, for about the same amount of time. I thought it was from work. Delivery trucks leave their vehicles running and park right next to our windows. I thought it was a result of that. It happens off an on all day. But I still have that exhaust smell
When at home too.

I have had this problem on and off for a year. Comes and goes. I think I figured out what’s causing it for me. Every time I get exposed to high temperature grease I smell it. The last time I touched it just a little bit to test and 5 minutes later even after washing my hands the smell came back. I will now wear rubber gloves and hopefully never touch that stuff again.
