Hello, folks. My friend’s kid has been diagnosed with listeriosis. She is hospitalized. Doctors suspect that she has probably eaten something bad. I wonder if it could be that soft cheese was a possible cause of this infection. I would really appreciate if you could share your opinion here. Thank you in advance.

Hi, there. Food can be an important source of Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium lives in soil and water. It easily contaminates vegetables. Animals that eat them can easily get infected. People take this food that is not prepared well and get infected as well. Those are usually uncooked meat, unpasteurized milk or uncooked vegetables. I guess soft cheese is no exception here. It can be a source of Listeria. You can consult an expert about this question.

Hi, there. I would agree with the previous post. Soft cheese should be avoided. This is especially valid for pregnant women since they are prone to Listeria. Soft cheeses that should be avoided are: Brie, Camembert, feta and blue-veined cheesesl. Mexican style cheeses should also be avoided. Those are: queso fresco, panela and queso blanco. I hope this piece of info will help. Good luck with all! Bye!

Hello, everyone. I have also heard something about this. Listeria can be transmitted via soft cheeses. Therefore, people with weakened immune system should avoid them. Instead of them, eat hard cheeses. The most famous one is cheddar. Semi-soft cheeses are also safe for consuming. This would be mozzarella. I hope this helps also. Bye!
